The perfect poolside summer smut.

July 5, 2015 by tillie 4 Comments

Apparently “mom porn” is a totally legit “literary” genre now, and the lemon grove is a perfect example of the tedious tawdriness that is the genre. It iswell-written, but not quite enjoyable. It is sexy but not overtly so. The story is based in a serious family drama, but it never feels quite explored. Not quite sexy, not quite serious. I liked it and disliked it, the words of both love and hate being too strong. The plot is simple. Jenn is on holiday in […]

You, too, can speak the name of the wind. JK. Only the specially chosen can do that.

May 25, 2015 by tillie 3 Comments

I am in love with The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I cannot be snarky about this one. I have fallen in love completely and it has left me blind to the faults of this novel. I want to speak the name of the wind, I want to find the dragons and I want to go in search of the Chandrian. But I don’t want to do it with Kvothe. Kvothe is the “Hero” of the story. We first meet him, quietly sweeping his inn as […]

On a Journey with Holden

April 23, 2015 by tillie 1 Comment

There are two kinds of people in this world. Those that read the catcher in the rye and scoff at the overrated “enlightenment” spewing forth on the pages and those that read it to dive into the memories and bravery in adolescence lost. I am of the latter category. I read the catcher in the rye to be comforted, to say, along with Holden, goodbye to everything that is my life. Just let them go, one by one and walk into the night.

The Last Man on Mars is Super Quippy. Also. In Mortal Danger…dun-dun-duuuun!

March 10, 2015 by tillie Leave a Comment

It is not often that a book about a man stranded on Mars could take place just about anywhere – but The Martian by Andy Weir could. In The Martian we meet Mark Watney the only man left on Mars due to a freak accident and misunderstanding. But this is merely a setup for a battle between Man and the elements of Mars. And if anyone stands a chance it’s Watney – the engineer of the space crew that abandoned him. The book does not […]

The space opera I never knew I needed

March 2, 2015 by tillie 20 Comments

Cordelia’s honor is sci-fi with a strong female character. And not strong in that she kicks physical butt, but she is intelligent, brave and caring. She invests in the relationships of those around her and she is both a strong leader and a brilliant second in command. (Please take a second to watch this brilliant youtube video about the importance of the first follower as illustrated through drunken dance). And then Captain Cordelia Naismith finds herself stranded in an ambush on an unknown planet. She […]

After the girl is gone

February 9, 2015 by tillie 1 Comment

One the first page of the first chapter a girl goes missing, barely fifteen and somebody’s daughter. And pretty. Asian with round, blue eyes. We meet the family at the breakfast table where she is, uncharacteristically, missing. The father is already halfway to work. And something about the chapter made me think; why is it that we are so obsessed with the gone girl. Why do we trace her life in those left behind?
