There is an actual sharknado in this book. I feel like that should somehow be review enough. I mean… Maria Dahvana Headley seems like a wonderful person and I feel truly awful for saying this, but Magonia is a terrible book, it is unbelievable, boringly crafted and the structure of the story is completely imbalanced. I hated it, I was bored out of my mind – but the cover’s really pretty, so I guess that’s something. It starts out fine. Aza is your run of […]
Not just a woman in a car
Cheryl is driving along in her car. On the outside she is stuck in traffic. On the inside she is pensive, intense, her face is arranged for the spectator. She is not just a woman in a car..here, I’ll let her tell you what she means: “I drove to the doctor’s office as if I was starring in a movie Phillip was watching — windows down, hair blowing, just one hand on the wheel. When I stopped at red lights, I kept my eyes mysteriously […]
To open a book is to make a promise
To open a book is to make a promise. I open the book and promise that I will read through the set-up, that I will devote myself during the time it takes for a story to slowly emerge from its pages. The author, in turn, promises me a pay-off, to revel in emotion, only dully present in my own day to day life experience. This is a promise I make often; I like to think I’ve been around a bookshelf or two in my day. […]
In all creation; first there is destruction
You guys called it. This book is scare-mazeballs. I read this book in one day, or rather, I used up all of my night to finish it and then I couldn’t sleep. There are no monsters in this book, no zombies, only the core of humanity stripped and laid bare. I got up a lot to check the locks on my door. So here’s the obligatory summary (Spoilers, sweety). I’ll make it as short as possible; We open the novel on the night of the last […]
Someone totally and actually dies
“Oh, we’re such a caring school,” the principal told me. Blah, blah. blah. Let me tell you the first thing I thought when I walked into that playground on that kindergarten orientation day was cliquey. Cliquey, cliquey, cliquey. I’m not surprised someone ended up dead. Oh, all right. I guess that’s overstating it. I was a little surprised.” What if I told you that you were going to love a book about 3 moms whose kids start in kindergarten and then they drink champagne for […]
In which I introduce the incredible notion that women are people.
“Coincidences to get characters into trouble are great; coincidences to get them out of it are cheating.” Emily Coates Wise Man’s fear would be the perfect book if Patrick Rothfuss could just stop being in love with his main character, Kvothe. Rothfuss is a skilled writer and proficient in building words, but everything in this book is about how awesome Kvothe is – when, in reality, he’s a 16 year old boy who sort of bumbles around. Mistakes do not happen to Kvothe, but if they do some crazy happenstance will […]
