How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi

December 22, 2020 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

So, I started writing a review of this book when I finished it in February. I’m not posting that because it feels like a decade has passed since February. I’ve been toiling over what I would do with this review. I don’t think that adding my commentary brings anything new or productive to the table. I believe that part of my role is to shut up and listen. We can’t simply be NOT racist and expect change to happen. Stand up to racism. Stand up to […]

Pivotal but not admirable

American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House by Jon Meacham

December 17, 2020 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

I’ve read a lot about how awful Andrew Jackson was, especially the last four years. Jackson owned slaves and believed unequivocally in the “supreme race”. His racism almost certainly fueled his desire to remove Native Americans from their homes and force them away from white settlements. This book won the Pulitzer Prize in 2009 for what author Jon Meacham’s hometown newspaper, the Chattanooga Times Free Press call “an unflinching portrait of a not always admirable democrat but a pivotal president, written with an agile prose […]

Stuxnet and Cyberwar

Sandworm: A New Era of Cyberwar and the Hunt for the Kremlin's Most Dangerous Hackers by Andy Greenberg

Countdown to Zero Day: Stuxnet and the Launch of the World's First Digital Weapon by Kim Zetter

December 15, 2020 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

While I am absolutely grouping my reading in a mad rush to finish my reviews, I would have grouped these two regardless as they are forever intertwined in my mind. In fact, Countdown to Zero Day is reference in Sandworm and it is why I read it. I got excited about Sandworm last year and waited more than six months for it at my library. I’ve read a fair amount about the general topic and I am fascinated by it. Sandworm is about the Russian […]

Just delightful

Stardust by Neil Gaiman

December 14, 2020 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

I love Neil Gaiman. I find his books just so delightful. My introduction to him was the movie Stardust years ago. I found it, much like I find his work now, delightful. I remember at the time thinking that the movie was a little more “grown-up” than I expected; I assumed it was a children’s fairytale. I have since learned through a Neil Gaiman interview at the end of the audiobook that Stardust was all along a fairytale for adults. I think that the book […]

Murderbot!

All Systems Red by Martha Wells

Artificial Condition by Martha Wells

December 14, 2020 by thewheelbarrow 2 Comments

I really thought I was going to read all of the novellas this year but I did not. This series became my work break readers as I had them in the kindle app and could read them on my phone. That and I do not get reception where I work so it was a really nice lunchtime treat to read but as I’ve been working from home. I stopped reading at lunch as it would have been quite rude to ignore my family while at […]

Journey before Destination!

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson

Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson

Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson

Edgedancer by Brandon Sanderson

December 11, 2020 by thewheelbarrow 2 Comments

Small note: I had every intention of reading Rhythm of War before posting this but I will not be getting to it before the year ends. Why is every hold at my library available RIGHT NOW?! The Stormlight Archive I used to loathe science fiction and fantasy books.  Those books were for nerds and in middle school, I would not be a nerd. Well, fast forward *ahem* about *cough*twenty*cough* or so years and I read SF/F almost exclusively when I read fiction. As a result, […]
