Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg by Irin Carmon and Shana Knizhnik

This is a book I should have read much sooner than I did. I only knew RBG as the a liberal member of the Supreme Court who wrote incredible dissents and for some reason shot towards fame late in her life. This book explains why that happened and makes me wonder why it didn’t happen sooner. RBG was and absolutely incredible person and I find myself far more like her than I ever would have imagined. This book serves as an abbreviated biography of why […]

I know him, that can’t be

John Adams by David McCullough

December 29, 2020 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

One of my first favorite books was Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes. It won the Newberry Medal in 1944 and I must have read a dozen times starting in fourth or fifth grade. Since then, I have loved revolutionary America. Naturally then, I’ve wanted to read this book for quite some time. I read 1776, also by David McCullough, while in college and found myself interested in this book.  As a history major, I didn’t specialize in any specific era but colonial America would have […]

Professional Development Reading

A World in Disarray: American Foreign Policy and the Crisis of the Old Order by Richard N. Haass

The New Rules of War: Victory in the Age of Durable Disorder by Sean McFate

On Grand Strategy by John Lewis Gaddis

Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action by Simon Sinek

Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging by Sebastian Junger

So, I’m cheating here. I’m grouping these books together because I read them all for work and I didn’t write reviews right away. Now I am behind and I barely remember reading half of them. There are a few others that I could lump in here but I would recommend them to others but probably not these unless you would also like to read them Army officers are reading for professional development. Starting with the first listed, A World in Disarray. I read this back […]

More American Leadership

Leadership: In Turbulent Times by Doris Kearns Goodwin

December 29, 2020 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

This book was a birthday gift from my sister last year and I loved it. I previously read Team of Rivals which deserves every word of praise it garners so I was excited to read another book by DKG. This book highlights four different American presidents: Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, and Lyndon Johnson. DKG points out that she is only focusing on LBJ’s civil rights policies, and avoiding his handling of the Vietnam War. I also learned that DKG was an intern for […]

The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels by Jon Meacham

December 28, 2020 by thewheelbarrow 1 Comment

I don’t remember why I read this book. I was reading American Lion by Meacham and enjoying it so I added it to the queue without knowing much about it. The book uses American historical examples to show that the time in which we live now, as awful as it sometimes seems, is nothing new to America and we’ve always endured and become better for it. That is not to say that we have fixed all of the wrongs and injustices but we have gradually […]

The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History by John M. Barry

Pale Rider: The Spanish Flu of 1918 and How it Changed the World by Laura Spinney

December 27, 2020 by thewheelbarrow 2 Comments

I read The Great Influenza a few months ago after coming across it. I think I would have read it regardless of the current pandemic as I still believe my knowledge of the world in the WWI era to be lacking. The Great Influenza focuses on the Spanish Flu and its impact in the United States. It also details the history of medicine and virology, specifically as it pertains to the flu. The book is long and comprehensive but I really enjoyed it.  It really […]
