Zero Dark Thirty the book!

September 14, 2014 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

I joined the military  after 9/11 but I think would have joined even if the tragedy never occurred.  I always felt the need and desire to serve so I certainly identify, to an extent, with the SEALs in this story.  Since I am in the military, the specter of Usama bin Laden (UBL) always lingered over us and his actions have impacted my life immensely.  I vividly remember the day that he was killed.  Many of my friends celebrated.  Some celebrated by partying, some had […]

It’s like watching TV but longer!

September 12, 2014 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

I checked out this audio book because I really enjoy The Colbert Report.  I appreciate the character and the thinly-veiled satire of the show immensely.  Thus, I genuinely liked the first 35 minutes or so of the audio book.  Stephen Colbert narrates his manifesto with assistance from heavyweights Amy Sedaris and Jon Stewart among others.  The book was nominated for a Grammy but lost to Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, a slight that I’m certain Colbert noticed.  I found it hilarious at first but as […]

The Daylight War

September 2, 2014 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

First and foremost, I adore this series. Peter V. Brett created a richly beautiful world with a myriad of interesting and fascinating characters. The Daylight War is the third book (of five planned) in the Demon Cycle. I found the pacing a little slower than the previous books as a whole. The Daylight War delved deep into the personal relationships that formed during the previous two books. I think that Arlen grew the most in this book. He seems much more comfortable and complete as […]

Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Too

May 8, 2014 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

This review will be woefully inept as I finished this book over a month ago.  I remember really liking it but I was surprised I gave it four stars rather than five.   This is Tina Fey’s autobiography and the audiobook is narrated by Tina.  If I read this book without any context I could still identify it as her work.  Maybe that is because I loved 30 Rock but in any event this book is thoroughly Tina.  In the book she discusses more of […]

Fortified with Essential Minerals!

April 22, 2014 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

I was taught that when grocery shopping to stick to the perimeter of the store because he aisles of the store contain the foods that would make me fat.  I have an intermediate understanding of what foods or macros one should consume to remain healthy and a book that delved into the story behind the food seemed very interesting. The book jumps right into a secret meeting where food companies got together to discuss their products collectively.  Right away, one executive declares that he will […]

A Beginner’s Guide to Atheism

March 31, 2014 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

I always prefer to listen to an audiobook narrated by the author. I think there is an element of authenticity that is not present otherwise. Hitch is an excellent orator but this book was poorly read. The sound goes in and out and becomes difficult to hear at times. It was thoroughly distracting from the essays. God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything is a collection of essays written by one of the paragons of modern atheism, Christopher Hitchens. Hitch discusses his own childhood […]
