Repeating history?

February 16, 2018 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

I have many thoughts about this book but as always, here’s the situation that led to me reading it.  This Kind of War is another book from the Army Chief of Staff’s reading list.  It has also been recommended by Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis as a must-read. Secretary Mattis is known, colloquially, as the Warrior Monk due to his dedication to his craft and his knowledge and understanding of making war.  He is known to be a voracious reader and believes that all leaders […]

The MPAA rating of this book should be R(R).

I’ve been wanting to read this book for a few years and I was in between books so I finally checked it out.  As an aside, then four other books became available from my queue so I have quite the backlog of reading to do at the moment.  I digress. I loved this book.  I enjoyed it so much that while listening to it, I sought out the ebook so that I could read it in between commutes.  It was a fun and exciting read. […]

Wreck your day with a Steinbeck Novella!

January 23, 2018 by thewheelbarrow 1 Comment

I moved to Monterey, CA last summer and decided that while I was here I would read Stienbeck’s catalog.  He’s from this area and writes a lot about it.  East of Eden takes place a town over in Salinas.  The town is now home of the National Steinbeck museum.  Cannery Row takes place on Monterey’s Cannery Row.  Needless to say, there is a lot of Steinbeck here. Before The Pearl, the only Steinbeck I’d read were East of Eden and Of Mice and Men.  I […]

Oceans rise, empires faaaaaaall!

January 23, 2018 by thewheelbarrow 4 Comments

This review will be one of the more spoiler-y reviews out there.  It’s about book seven in a series so it’s hard not to talk about things that have happened.  That said, here we go: One of my favorite aspects of the Expanse series is the wonderful titles of each novel and trying to figure out how it relates to the book.  You see, each book is title something very grandiose and magnificent from somewhere in myth, legend, literature, or religion. Book one is Leviathan […]

Some Perspective…

January 19, 2018 by thewheelbarrow 1 Comment

I read this book because I loved the author’s novel, Matterhorn.  What It Is Like to Go to War is a non-fiction book that is, essentially, a behind the scenes look at Matterhorn.  It also reads as two different books and I have mixed feelings about the two parts. The first part, which represents nearly the first two-thirds of the book, is Marlantes discussing his decision to join the Marines during Vietnam and his experiences in combat.  I found this aspect of the book very […]

The Expanse comes back soon!

January 17, 2018 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

It’s nearly impossible to discuss the novella without spoilers for the series but I will try. The Expanse series is one that I recommend to nearly everyone who enjoys really good sci-fi.  There are currently seven novels, six novellas, and two seasons of a tv show on SyFy; season three starts soon. The series takes place a few hundred years in the future wherein humanity lives all across the solar system.  Humans developed the means to travel quickly but not light speed, as in much […]
