Getting to know some new authors in a familiar setting

There won’t be any spoilers for Star Wars in this review.  This book also contains no spoilers for the movies.   Canto Bight is a new location to the Star Wars universe.  It is a planet that is relevant only because on it rests the city of Canto Bight.  Canto Bight, the place, is Las Vegas and Dubai but more extravagant.  Canto Bight, the book, is a collection of short stories follows a several minor characters, heretofore unknown to the greater Star Wars universe. So, […]

Army Chief of Staff Reading List #8

March 13, 2018 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

First of all, I am on a roll with my professional reading so far this year.  I have another completed book to review and I’m halfway through another already.  While it may sound like conceit, I am really impressed with myself so far.  I made it a point this year to do a better job of, not just reading, but maximizing my time and so far, so good. Anyways, The World America Made made was a short look at the policies and decision throughout the […]

Army Chief of Staff Reading List #7

I looked forward to reading this book for a while.  I really enjoyed another of the author’s books, The Generals, and its critical take on U.S. military leadership.  Fiasco did not disappoint. Fiasco is the story of the early part of the Iraq War.  There is a little background so that one understands the main players, namely Wolfowitz and Rumsfeld, and then it jumps headfirst into a chronological discussion of the decisions made and their repercussions.  Fiasco discusses how the war was basically preordained.  The […]

Army Chief of Staff Reading List #6

Connectography is one of those books that tries looking at something differently.  In the case of Connectography, if I’m being extremely simple, that something is maps.  Parag Khanna essentially discusses how he thinks maps will change in the future.  The world will be divided less by political and geographical boundaries and more by economic interests, specifically logistics. Khanna offers up examples to support his argument.  He looks at Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and discusses how countries, like China, have used them to grow and expand. […]

Smug but probably right

February 21, 2018 by thewheelbarrow 3 Comments

My path to this book was far more interesting than usual.  It started last year when I worried that my twitter feed might be turning into an echo chamber of my own beliefs.  I’d like to claim that I sought out, with dedicated research and effort, a wide smattering of people with different opinions than my own.  What I really did, was stumble upon a thread wherein someone who was looking to do what I wanted, asked who were principled conservatives to follow.  That’s how […]

Army Chief of Staff Reading List #5

Here’s another one from the Chief of Staff reading list.  As always, I read it now because it became available.  There’s a lesson here too.  If you put a hold on a dozen or so books at once, several will probably become available at the same time.  Then you have to listen or read fast.  I’m usually a 1.5x guy but I’ve listened to the last few at 2.0x.  It’s great while working out but it can be awkward when you’re doing dishes.  Lesson learned. […]
