More like Ron Churn-ow

December 31, 2018 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

I read Chernow’s biography of Hamilton last year because, well, I can’t see the musical.  Also, I majored in History as an undergrad and my favorite era is the American Revolution.   Hamilton, the biogrpaphy, was excellent.  It was the first major biography that read despite a good friend recommending Chernow a few years ago.  I enjoyed Hamilton enough that I added Grant to my queue as soon as it was added to my library and after eight months of waiting, I got my turn. […]

Living in Steinbeck’s World

December 18, 2018 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

Save your drafts as you go! I lost a really long double review for these books due to my own negligence.  Ugh….   I moved to Monterey a year and a half ago, the home of Steinbeck and the setting for both of these novels.  Both take place at real locations in the greater Monterey area, though Tortilla Flat is a fictional neighborhood, which added to my interest.  Both novels follow a few main characters who live together and experience the effects of their shenanigans. […]

The Interdependency

November 24, 2018 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

I love Scalzi.  He is fun and his books a fast reads that always leave me entertained.  His audiobooks are frequently narrated by Will Wheaton and I enjoy his voice work.  All in all, I am a fan and the Interdependency trilogy is a lot of fun and I really enjoy it. This is a new world for Scalzi.  In this universe, interstellar travel is possible through pathways known as the flow and it is collapsing.  Soon worlds will not be able to access each […]

Better than the Potter comparison

November 24, 2018 by thewheelbarrow 1 Comment

I read this book because I started following Dr. Okorafor on Twitter a few years ago.  I don’t remember exactly what made me decide to follow her but I do know that part of it was due to my desire to avoid insularity.  That and I’d heard great things about her books.  I’ve already read the first two novellas in her Binti series; the third won a Hugo Award this year! Akata Witch, if I were to grossly over simplify, is a different take on […]

Want to fall in love with Trevor Noah?

October 18, 2018 by thewheelbarrow 6 Comments

I’d read good things about this book for a little while but I assumed it was just another comedian celebrity writing a book to make some money.  Since I usually spend money on those exact books, I bought this with one of my first Audible credits.  I’ve always thought that comedians who read their own books are the very best of narrators so it seemed like a safe pick.  I’d watched the Daily Show with Trevor a few times.  A little less often than I […]

It’s a David Grann-onball

October 17, 2018 by thewheelbarrow 2 Comments

I’m reviewing two books by the same author because I am so far behind in my reviews.  In fact, I finished my cannonball last month but I need to make it count by getting these reviews submitted.  Plus, what a great post title!? So, I first read Killers of the Flower Moon because it seemed like everyone I knew was reading it.  That wasn’t quite true but it started feeling ubiquitous so I started it in July and finished it in a few days.  David Grann […]
