The Undoing Project: A Friendship That Changed Our Minds by Michael Lewis

January 14, 2019 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

This book, by the author of Moneyball, is essentially a biography of the two men who did more to change the way we think about thinking.  Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman are Israeli psychologists who discovered heuristics and connected the fields psychology and economics, helping create the new field of behavioral economics.  If you recognize either name, it is probably Daniel Kahneman who wrote the outstanding book Thinking, Fast and Slow a few years ago.  At the beginning of that book he writes about his […]

A little too timely

LikeWar: The Weaponization of Social Media by P.W. Singer & Emerson T. Brooking

January 12, 2019 by thewheelbarrow 1 Comment

I picked up this book to be a small break from my all the Steinbeck I’ve been reading lately.  I like to alternate a little between fiction and non-fiction.  Within the non-fiction, I like to mix it up between professional reading and just interesting.  Usually, there is some overlap and I think that applies here.  Also, one of the authors, P.W. Singer is coming to speak at my school next week and I wanted to read it before he arrived.  I read an earlier book […]

A Road Trip with a Dog

Travels with Charley: In Search of America by John Steinbeck

January 8, 2019 by thewheelbarrow 3 Comments

I read this due to my Steinbeck kick.  I was a little worried about reading it immediately after The Grapes of Wrath but it was the perfect antidote to my melancholy mood.  This is a travel journey by one of America’s preeminent authors who decided that that he no longer felt in touch with America and her people and wanted to find her again.  Discontented seems to best describe the way he felt with his life when he set off on his journey in 1960 […]

Mine eyes have seen the glory

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

January 7, 2019 by thewheelbarrow 3 Comments

Buckle up, this one is pretty long.  I finished this book a few days ago and the impression it made on me was so visceral, I had to wait to write about it.   When I consider what it takes to be a classic, regardless of the medium, my first thought is timelessness.  Will this item stand the test of time and all that entails?  I believe that the term classic is bandied about too often and too frivolously. We call anything that we like […]

CANNONBALL!!!

December 31, 2018 by thewheelbarrow 2 Comments

So, I follow Shea on twitter and really appreciate his brand of humor.  He is a writer for the sports and pop-culture blog The Ringer.  Shea is 100% enthusiastic at all times and gets just as excited for other as he does for himself.  This book is a collection of essays and artwork about the NBA from 1980 to now.  It is full of ridiculous essays like a draft of the greatest fictional basketball players and the comprehensive list of the most disrespectful dunks in […]

Chief of Staff Reading List #15-17

December 31, 2018 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

Ok, this is crappy and I know it but I am finishing the cannonball.  Last year I finished book 52 on the 31st but I was a dozen reviews behind.  This year, I got to 64 books and I’m still behind on my reviews but I can get there and I read all of these books for the same reason and that is professional development at work which makes them inherently less interesting to those who do not share my profession.  Anyway, here I go. […]
