Probably more my fault than the book….

The Book of English Magic by Richard Heygate, Philip Carr-Gomm

May 26, 2019 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

The Book of English Magic turned out to have two very special magic powers: It made me realise that I’m nowhere near as open-minded as I think I am, and It managed to make one minute of reading fell like ten years of slogging through swampland Let me explain… Despite not being at all spiritual or religious myself, I do enjoy reading about the beliefs that some people hold as a way of trying to better understand them. Whilst I’ve often then arrived at some […]

Bringing a little magic into my life

A Pocketful of Crows by Joanne M. Harris

May 18, 2019 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

This year has not been the best for me reading wise – I seem to have little to no attention span at the moment, and for the past month I’ve been slogging though a book on magic (don’t judge me) that has actually been a far from magical experience. And so, looking for something a little lighter, I stumbled upon A Pocketful of Crows. This one had the magic I had been looking for.  A nameless girl lives in the forest. Keeping apart from others, […]

In which it turns out that I DO like kissing books

Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase

May 6, 2019 by TheShitWizard 8 Comments

Despite not really reading romance novels, I couldn’t help but notice some Cannonball discussions in which this one was mentioned a bunch of times. I’m super glad that I lurked on those threads as, although I hadn’t really been sure if romance was my flavour, it turned out that I absolutely loved Lord of Scoundrels, which was the most fun I’ve had reading this year. Jessica Trent’s brother is a nincompoop. A nincompoop who’s managing to fritter away his fortune with his high society friends, […]

Not quite measuring up to expectations

Clean Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles #1) by Ilona Andrews

May 2, 2019 by TheShitWizard 5 Comments

I actually read this a few weeks ago, but since then I’ve found myself so consumed by Game of Thrones that I’ve neglected pretty much everything else in my life. Let’s get caught up, shall we? In the midst of some heavy duty non-fiction reading, I found myself jonesing for some nice and easy brain candy, so when Clean Sweep came up on offer on my kindle, I jumped at it. I’ve already read and enjoyed two Ilona Andrews series (Kate Daniels and Hidden Legacy), […]

I want to live in this man’s mind…

The View From The Cheap Seats: Selected Non-Fiction by Neil Gaiman

April 19, 2019 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

For me, reading Neil Gaiman is like giving my brain a hug, and that’s equally as true of his non-fiction writing as it is his fiction books. So The View From The Cheap Seats was welcome respite from real life shenanigans, although it is also responsible for my already hefty to-be-read list mushrooming into something that could now blot out the sun. Comprised of a vast array of non-fiction essays, they’re separated into topics to make it easy to navigate for casual readers and ensuring […]

Ugly but incredible

Last Exit to Brooklyn by Hubert Selby Jr

March 27, 2019 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

Last Exit to Brooklyn is an incredible book – less a piece of writing and more a howl of pain – albeit one that is also an incredibly difficult read, due to the bleak and brutal depiction of life within its pages. While it’s definitely a 5 star book, it’s not one that I can imagine rereading much without completely losing what’s left of my faith in humanity. Introducing us to some of the denizens of a poor neighbourhood in Brooklyn, we take a peek […]
