The Golden Atlas: The Greatest Explorations, Quests and Discoveries on Maps by Edward Brooke-Hitching

January 12, 2020 by TheShitWizard 3 Comments

As regular haunter of r/mapporn with a large appetite for history, The Golden Atlas was a pretty perfect Christmas gift for me, a gorgeously illustrated book featuring lots of ancient maps and the stories of how the lands depicted on them were discovered. Taking us from antiquity up until the Victorian age, when we finally inked in bits of the last of the world’s unknown lands, some of my favourites were those that were based heavily on conjecture. Whether these were the maps of the […]

Please Mary, may I have some more?

Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal by Mary Roach

December 31, 2019 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

Gulp is my second Mary Roach book (I’d previously read and loved Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers) and is a thoroughly entertaining trip through our digestive systems. I do have digestive issues of my own, which no doubt heightened the appeal of this book to me, but as it’s so interesting and entertainingly written, I expect those whose stomachs don’t kick off regularly will also find something to enjoy. Gulp takes you through the whole process – from smell (which actually provides us […]

The end of the world has arrived. Finally.

The Core (Demon Cycle #5) by Peter V Brett

December 31, 2019 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

I’m normally a pretty fast reader, as well as someone who usually wants their fantasy series to continue on forever, but The Core stopped that trend. Taking an almost excruciatingly long two months to slog through, this was partly down to the time of year (work always gets crazier than normal in the lead up to Christmas) but also down to the fact that I was pretty much over this series by the end of the third book. The end point that the series has […]

This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor by Adam Kay

December 4, 2019 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

This is Going to Hurt: The Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor is important reading for any Brit who’s about to vote without bearing the future of the NHS in mind. I’ve worked in that arena for the last 15 years and the last 10 years of that has been under the banner of ‘austerity’. In that time we’ve seen services go from underfunded to seriously critical, with staff breaking more and more regularly thanks to the increased stresses and strains that go hand in […]

Whodunnit, meet Breakfast Club

One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus

November 19, 2019 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

The Breakfast Club goes slightly wonky as five students enter detention, but only four leave. The nerd, the princess, the jock and the criminal are those left standing, while the deceased – the gossip blogger – had been about to ruin each of their lives by publishing their deepest secrets in his latest post. So who did the deed? It’s a slow burn to find out, following each of the group as they deal with the fall out from Simon’s death, the media having turned […]

I’m getting kinda weary of this series now

The Skull Throne (Demon Cycle #4) by Peter V Brett

October 26, 2019 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

We’ve reached the fourth book in the Demon Cycle, and I can’t really tell if I’m really enjoying it anymore. It certainly didn’t help that, despite there actually being some moving forward of plot and some deaths of people that actually matter to the book, The Skull Throne felt to me like a bit of a retread of The Daylight War.  It picks up exactly where it left off, after one of our potential delivers threw himself and his rival off a cliff, and while […]
