I'm tired of cancer eating my friends and family. I'm not a scientist, but I'm stubborn and I love books - so I'll be fundraising the sad and powerless right outta my hair.

Strong, Strong Candidate for Worst Book of the Year

Seducing Donavan by Lisa Lanay

December 30, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

Haley is a Dr with her own home, two very cool doggos, and a super rich bestie that she helps out with money matters.  Haley is a FUCKING BOSS. Donovan is a man child who hates commitment. Haley plays games that are beneath her to get Donovan to change his ways. Donovan.  Who is WAY BENEATH HER. Haley: you are worth better. I hated this book.

Heavy Going but Uplifting

Skin Deep by Hayley Lawrence

December 30, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

The Best Niece in Australia recommended this, along with The Ickabog, to me.  One of these things is not like the others! Its heavy going.  Scarlett was heavily scarred in an auto accident, and learns a lesson about beauty being on the inside from a family she meets in the remote mountains she escaped to with her father.  Its a tough lesson, since she’s been taught by her grandmother that her physical beauty is an intrinsic part of her value as a person. Gran was […]

Why was I avoiding Emily Henry?

Beach Read by Emily Henry

December 30, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

Oh, this was so much fun.  An opposites-attract rom com where both protagonists are authors (write what you know, I guess!). January has inherited a house from her dad – the titular beach house – where he had a second life, with a second wife.  She would not be here if she had any other options, but she’s between novels with zero inspiration, and the bills won’t pay themselves. Gus is your standard New York Lonely Boy (thanks, Girls 5Eva), a Franzen/Eggers style writer who […]

Not perfect, but so worth it.

Unforgiven by Sarah Barrie

This is another novel I picked up because I confused the author with someone else, but I am so glad I did!  I understand the second book in the series is out now, too. Lexi is a survivor of a serial killer.  She’s doing the usual “there’s a little bit of blood in my JackDaneils-stream” self medicating that a lot of trauma survivors fall victim to. Rachel is the cop who put the serial killer away… or did she?  There’s either a copycat, or she […]

A fun romp – will look forward to the tv adaptation

Counterfeit by Kirstin Chen

December 30, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

This was a Reese Witherspoon book club entry, and I fully expect that at some point we’ll see a limited series. I know I’m supposed to be totally over unreliable narrators, but this was just good fun. The narrative conceit of having about 85% of the book as a statement to the cops lends itself really well to the unreliable narrator, so it’s actually a lot less annoying than it could be – I kind of expect that the whole, entire, unvarnished truth is not […]

Welcome back, Sarah Addison Allen

Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen

December 30, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

Its been a long time between books for Sarah Addison Allen, and it is a pure delight to have her back with a new novel for my sister and I to devour. I’m going to be light on plot, because I don’t want to spoil any of the pleasure of reading it for anybody.  Zoey is moving back to Mallow Island, where she spent time in an apartment block, the Dellawisp, as a child. All SAA books are wildly whimsical, and this is no exception.  […]
