I'm tired of cancer eating my friends and family. I'm not a scientist, but I'm stubborn and I love books - so I'll be fundraising the sad and powerless right outta my hair.

I feel like the title of the 5th book here really gives the game away, in terms of where these books are going. The Nardone Family Saga, this has grandiosely styled itself. Without editing, here are my thumbnail notes from The Book Journal: Well, this was fun.  Stupid fun, but fun. In the first book, which I thought I had read but had not in fact read, we buy a chick at auction to prove ourselves to the Evil Dudes ™ we are trying to […]

The Outcast Series

A Kingdom of Exiles by S.B. Nova

A Kingdom of Nomads by S.B. Nova

In book one, we meet Serena.  Long & lanky, different from the other girls in the village, Serena is a pretty classic Cinderella, complete with dead dad and wicked stepmother.  Who, when her plan to sell her stepdaughter’s virginity to the local smith’s apprentice falls through, sets her up for a trial as a changeling. As one does, I guess? When found guilty-ish, Serena is set out in a cage overnight in the forest.  The theory is, if she’s a changeling, the fae will come […]

Charming – Another Great Plane Read

Weyward by Emilia Hart

December 31, 2023 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

This was actually recommended by Sarah Addison Allen in a newsletter.  Since I love all of her novels, without exception, I took her recommendations as gospel.  This was another plane read from The Great Hawaii Odyssey of 2023 (it took a long time to get home), and I was charmed by it. Told in three distinct voices from different centuries, Weyward tells the tale of a family of women who are both at one with nature, and a little bit… conventionally unnatural.  The men in […]

The Amulet Series

The Stonekeeper by Kazu Kibuishi

The Stonekeeper's Curse by Kazu Kibuishi

December 30, 2023 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

Wanting to get in on the fun of sitting around, drinking tea, and discussing books, the Best Nephew in Australia (11) fished out his favourite graphic novels to send home with me.  They are suspiciously pristine, to the extent that I was very concerned about reading them – the rest of us are tough on books, and he may be adopted (not really, Xan, that’s hyperbole for comedic purposes, I promise). Amulet is a series of kids fantasy/horror graphic novels, and so far I’m really […]

A Day At A Time

Smoulder by Laurel K Hamilton

Slay by Laurel K Hamilton

Normally I would have needed to make these books two individual reviews, but books 29 and 30 cover so little time in the world of Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter that a single review will suffice.  If you have not read any of this series, this review is not going to encourage you to start,  or explain the basic premise.  It may convince you to save yourself, though, if you were considering it. Y’all, I think it might be time for me to give these up.  […]

The MacGuffin is Distracting

The Seven by Chris Hammer

December 30, 2023 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

I’m going to state at the outset that I think it was a fantastic call on Chris Hammer’s part to move on from Martin Scarsden (protagonist of previous novels Scrublands, Silver and Trust) as his lead character, and instead follow Ivan and Nell, the detectives, into new novels.  Martin was getting to be annoyingly omniscient, and ever so slightly… overbearingly self righteous about it.  Following the detectives means we have a legitimate entry point into each new murder, and allows Hammer to mine the back […]
