I'm tired of cancer eating my friends and family. I'm not a scientist, but I'm stubborn and I love books - so I'll be fundraising the sad and powerless right outta my hair.

I’ve Got Good News, & Bad News

Wake by Shelley Burr

Ripper by Shelley Burr

December 31, 2023 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

The good news is, Ripper is actually a really good book. The bad news is, you have to get through Wake to read it. I mean, technically you can read Ripper as a standalone, but it’s a better book if you know the background on whatshisname – Lane (it’s been a long afternoon). Wake is… not great.  I mean, the ideas are there, but the execution is generic enough that I have it conflated with another rural Aussie crime novel in my mind.  The basics: […]

Celeste Ng Does Not Disappoint

Our Missing Hearts by Celest Ng

December 31, 2023 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

Wow.  Celeste Ng continues to not disappoint.  What a heartbreaker this was, for me*. This is a Covid novel, set in a US where all Asian races are blamed for pretty much all that ails society. I don’t consider myself a racist person, but what stuck with me on reading OMH was the notion that Margaret “didn’t have to know” about the kids being taken by the authorities, about how unjust PACT was, until she did.  I don’t have to know a lot of stuff, […]

Exactly What I Wanted It To Be

Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen

December 31, 2023 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

I’m not going to kid you, I have no objectivity when it comes to Sarah Addison Allen. Her Southern-set books depicting strong women with a little bit of magic prevailing over all that ails them are exactly my cup of peppermint tea. Other Birds is her first book in years, and to say I’ve been eagerly awaiting it is to grossly understate the case. Following Zoey as she moves to Mallow Island, South Carolina, the story is magical, romantic, whimsical and absolutely charming.  You know, […]

I’ll Give This A “Well-Played”

Man Hands by Sarina Bowen & Tanya Eby

December 31, 2023 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

This was a freebie, but I would have happily paid for it.  Kicked off at a frenetic pace, and never let up. Brynn is newly divorced and has lost her teaching job – her douchebag ex’s dad is the Dean and she’s now suspiciously redundant.  Her besties take her to a party, and to take her mind off a sudden appearance by The Ex, dare her to run into the crowd and kiss the first guy who makes eye contact. This happens to be Tom, […]

How Did I Sit On This For So Long?

Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust

December 31, 2023 by thegirlwhogotoverit 1 Comment

Holy wow, The Interwebs were 100% right about this being good.  It is so beautifully written, and everyone should read it. [Actually, this book is one of the reasons I cut a friend out of my life.  She refused to read it because it was queer fiction.  I’m too old to keep friends like that.] So.  Wow.  Sorya is a princess, locked in a tower.  Well, like half the penthouse floor of a castle, so it’s not a Rapunzel situation.  She’s got an awesome garden […]

I Cannot Wait To Read More

Lore by Alexandra Bracken

December 31, 2023 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

Boy, did I like this.   I finished it in a face mask at 10pm despite knowing I had to get up at 4am in the morning. Lore is your typical spiky female who has had to do it tough protagonist – we meet her beating the living crap out of some guy who threw his toxic masculinity over the wrong chick.  Her second fight is with someone from her past, with whom she’s clearly been yearning to reconnect. When she goes home, it all. Kicks. […]
