I'm tired of cancer eating my friends and family. I'm not a scientist, but I'm stubborn and I love books - so I'll be fundraising the sad and powerless right outta my hair.

I could not see any reason to finish this book

The Liars by Petronella McGovern

I’ll cut right to the chase.  I abandoned this book on page 176, because the dog went missing, presumed dead-as-message to the protagonist.  This book has the honour of being the first book all year that I didn’t finish. I read a lot; I watch a lot of tv.  I do not require a happy ending.  I don’t need the author to coddle me or run an Entourage-style universe where there are no stakes and everything always works out in the end.  However, you’d better […]

I don’t want to lend this book to my mother.

All Our Shimmering Skies by Trent Dalton

January 31, 2021 by thegirlwhogotoverit 2 Comments

She has a tendency to call dibs on my books, add them to her shelves/beside pile/endless stash of my previously loaned books, and I never see them again. I mean, I’ve made sure that I’m getting them in the will, so there’s that, but every now and then I think I’d like to see one or two of them again before her passing (especially since the women on her side are exceptionally long-lived). Trent Dalton’s second novel, All Our Shimmering Skies, reads like a fable […]

I reread this book specifically so I could start CBR 13 with it.

Neanderthal Seeks Human by Penny Reid

I remembered Book 1 of the Knitting in the City series as utterly charming – I can’t resist a tall dark and handsome grump brought low by a dorky heroine, and Quinn & Janie delivered for me.  I intended to reread this one alone, review it, and then get back to The Stand (I make so many inconvenient promises to myself, and this “reread before watching the new series” is bang on form), but found myself in the middle of a Total Rereid of the whole […]

This is my year of not apologising for reading romance

Highlander by Julia Sykes

January 10, 2019 by thegirlwhogotoverit 3 Comments

I have spent a lot of time being embarrassed about certain sections of my reading habits.  I have referred to romance novels as Treadmill Trash over and over again (yes, I like to read my kindle to distract myself while I run on the treadmill), but I’ve decided that this is my year to Woman Up and accept that I am just that into them. [For the record, I deleted a sentence up there describing the breadth of my reading habits.  You like reading about […]
