I'm tired of cancer eating my friends and family. I'm not a scientist, but I'm stubborn and I love books - so I'll be fundraising the sad and powerless right outta my hair.

Local Booksellers Know Best (Part Three)

Stone Town by Margaret Hickey

December 29, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

This is a rare fail from the local bookseller!  Recommended by the same bookseller who sold me These Hollow Vows, this was described as “My boss who loves Crime Fiction said this was really good.” It is apparently the second mystery featuring the detective protagonist, but I honestly don’t care enough to go back and catch up on the first book (I don’t even care enough to go back and look up his name).  This book was not compelling enough to overcome my Aussie fiction […]

I adored this book, but also wanted to throw it at the wall

Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid

December 29, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

How is it possible for me to have loved and hated this so, so much?  I’m utterly satisfied by the resolution, but at the same time, I want to throw it at the sliding glass door in the dining room. I’ve got a list of things that have never happened in tennis – the Aus open at Christmas?  “The game is Soto’s.”  Argh!  How has TJR researched what it’s like to play tennis well enough to be totally viscerally realistic, at the exact same time […]

Something of a departure

My Darling Daughter by JP Delaney

December 29, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

This author also wrote The Girl Before, but has since refined his preoccupations and writing to the point where I’d stop describing his work as psychological thrillers altogether. This is Sky’s story, and though she is something of an unreliable narrator, this never comes as the sort of cheap shock or “writing myself out of a corner” gimmick its been elsewhere.  Neither does the fact that Susie, her biological mother, has a more complicated past than we’re led to believe initially.  Removed by the courts […]

Sweetest Book I’ve Read This Year

Date Me, Bryson Keller by Kevin Van Whye

December 29, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

I don’t TikTok, so I am pretty sure that this hit my radar via Pajiba, and I am so glad it did.  It’s a top ten read of the year. Bryson agrees to a dare whereby he dates the first person to ask him out each Monday, until the end of that week.  The wording is nebulous – doesn’t specify a gender – so when Kai gets massively pissed at Bryson, he claims the week’s dates for himself. This is a sweet story with an […]

You Get What You Pay For

Ten Trends to Seduce your Best Friend by Penny Reid

December 29, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

When I read this, I’d been reading a lot of books that I picked up for free or for a dollar.  My thumbnail says “oh, this is why we pay for good books.” I really enjoyed Ten Trends (notes: “I didn’t want this to end”).  Winnie is a teacher, and Byron is an author of some renown.  He’s clearly on the autism spectrum, but no attempt is made to “redeem” him, make him more “normal,” or suggest that he needs to change in any way.  […]

Wait, this isn’t a YA series?

Gild by Raven Kennedy

Glint by Raven Kennedy

Gleam by Raven Kennedy

Glow by Raven Kennedy

December 29, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

Wow, I got this one totally wrong.  As the official Most Prolific Reader in the family, I pick books up all the time, and test them out.  Maybe they’re right for my brother, maybe they’re for my sister.  Perhaps someone is brutally murdered early on – then it’s for Nan.  Lately, I’ve been screening books for Australia’s Best (10yo) Niece.  I’d seen Gild around, and while I was (clearly) totally unspoiled, I somehow got the idea that it was YA fiction (maybe the price point?). […]
