I'm tired of cancer eating my friends and family. I'm not a scientist, but I'm stubborn and I love books - so I'll be fundraising the sad and powerless right outta my hair.

This book rubbed me the wrong way

Anthem by Noah Hawley

I’m going to try and explain why I was so irritated with this, but I freely admit that it might just have been me.  I’ve had some issues and frustrations this year with mansplainers… which may have contributed to just how much Hawley’s holier-than-thou, pompous tone resonated and irked me. I was looking forward to this one, because I loved Before the Fall and Hawley’s TV work.  But I was so frustrated and disappointed.  There’s a glimmer of a great story here – but it […]

I owe whoever recommended this a coke

Within These Wicked Walls by Lauren Blackwood

December 29, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

I think this was on one of the best of lists from Pajiba or Vulture.  Looks like I didn’t record the recommendation, which is a shame, because this was an exceptionally good call. Set in a richly detailed world, where debteras cleanse houses and people of manifestations, our protagonist is Andromeda, whose mentor has kicked her out before she could become officially licensed as a debtera.  Her only other option is to gain a wealthy patron, so she’s signed on as the 11th debtera to […]

The Best Niece in Australia Loaned Me These

Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger

Keeper of the Lost Cities: Exile by Shannon Messenger

Keeper of the Lost Cities: Everblaze by Shannon Messenger

December 29, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

Oh, these books are a pleasure.  Nothing gives me more joy than my niece, who has grown up watching me lend all my books to her mother, saying back to me “Wen, I think you’ll really like this book.” Sophie is an exceptional young lady, who turns out to be this universe’s version of a changeling.  She’s quickly extricated from the human world, which is well done for a book aimed at this age group – can’t drag it out too long. Turns out, there […]

Dark Olympus – Books One & Two

Neon Gods by Katee Robert

Electric Idol by Katee Robert

December 29, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

Long story short – these are great, and you should read them!  A rare romance series where I was invested in the world building as much if not more than I was in the One True Pairing. Neon Gods is a take on the Hades & Persephone myth, set in what is essentially modern day New York or Chicago.  The Underworld is the wrong side of the river.  A cabal of The Thirteen “Gods” rules.  A lot of these are legacy roles – there must […]

I don’t understand why they adapted this for TV

Pieces of Her by Karin Slaughter

December 29, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

I honestly struggled to read this book.  I couldn’t even get myself to look down at it as a distraction when I was on the treadmill.  I just felt no connection to the characters, for at least 80% of the book. I’ve read a couple of Slaughter books before this and found them quite enjoyable, but the pacing of PoH is all over the shop.  We’re dropped into Andy’s life without consideration for the fact that just because her mother loves her, doesn’t mean a […]

Wow, I did NOT like this

Victim Without A Face by Stefan Ahnhem

December 29, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

This book was recommended to me by my mother, which is the only reason I finished it.  I am so over Scandi fiction.  Women seem to always be Madonna/Whore, and all the power dynamics (particularly in the workplace and police force) are expressed via sexual domination, harassment, or outright assault. This book was written to have the bullied character be killing all his tormentors, then someone – maybe an editor – suggested that this had all been done before, or was too obvious. So they […]
