I'm tired of cancer eating my friends and family. I'm not a scientist, but I'm stubborn and I love books - so I'll be fundraising the sad and powerless right outta my hair.

Beach Reads Box Set

Mr Mayfair by Louise Bay

Dear Sexy Ex Boyfriend by Lauren Blakely

The Year We Fell Down by Sarina Bowen

December 30, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

The Beach Reads Box Set (Vol Two) was offered via the Penny Reid newsletter again this year, I think I picked it up either for free or for $1?  It’s no longer available on Amazon (but resides happily on my kindle).  Of note: I have still not finished Beach Reads Vol One, since I’ve spent the interval following the back catalogues of the authors around. Mr Mayfair was the first story, and properly sucked me in.  Our protagonists are Stella, who was dumped by her […]

Is this a British guy written by an American?

Good Girl, Bad Girl by Michael Rowbotham

Lying Beside You by Michael Rowbotham

December 30, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

So, I had my suspicions that Rowbotham was not British, because he wrote of his protagonist running miles, where I thought they were on kms (like all right thinking countries).  Turns out, he’s Australian, and we’re the odd ones out – both Brits and Americans are running miles. I picked Good Girl, Bad Girl up because I thought I’d already read one of his books – it has a similar cover to something I’ve actually read.  I’m glad I did, though, as it was a […]

I forgot who the killer was here.

Wake by Shelley Burr

December 30, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

Literally, between the time I read the book, and the time I sat down to write a thumbnail review, I forgot who the killer was.  I had to look it up, and it couldn’t have been more than a day or two. So… that probably says the most about this one. This is set 20 years after Mina-the-protagonist’s twin sister disappeared from her bed in the middle of the night.  Lane, a PI, turns up in town to search for her, since there’s reward money […]

The Prison Healer Books One – Three

The Prison Healer by Lynette Noni

The Gilded Cage by Lynette Noni

Blood Traitor by Lynette Noni

December 29, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

I am really, REALLY looking forward to The Best Niece in Australia being old enough to read these.  Actually, looking at my notes, by the time I’d gotten to book three I’d talked myself in to handing them over, even though they’re too old for her. What a great series, jam packed with cool mythology and fun characters (and, you know, heartbreak and scary bits and romance and betrayal). *Note* – this review will cover all three books, please look away now if you’re planning […]

I enjoyed this so much more than I thought I would

Cold Storage by David Koepp

December 29, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit 3 Comments

“From the screenwriter of Jurassic Park!” screams the cover.  Which Jurassic Park?  Original Flavour or New Generation?  No idea.  This is another Mum recommendation, but much more successful than the previous effort.  We actually picked her up a Bargain Box of Books for Christmas 2021, $100 for 30ish crime fiction novels that she’s spend the year reading. I enjoyed it much, much more than expected.  There were a few moments that actually had me laughing out loud. So, and bear with me here because it’s […]

Fact: Dolly Parton is an International Treasure

Run Rose Run by Dolly Parton & James Patterson

December 29, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

Nobody is disputing that Dolly is a most awesome person, in every possible way.   My mother has a weakness for country music; I am positive I was born knowing the words to Jolene. And this book is for-sure compelling – the suspense-lit version of a catchy song. But… there were issues.  The character development for Ethan felt tacked on for depth late in the process.  It felt awkward; never flowed in the same way as the rest of the book. And the trafficking was a […]
