The Importance Of Hearing an Author Read His Own Words

Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah

December 15, 2019 by The Chancellor 1 Comment

Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah My rating: 5 of 5 stars “Born a Crime” is Trevor Noah’s autobiography, up to through the present. I’m a big fan of biography and autobiography, but because this was a book club read and came highly recommended from friends and students, I looked forward to this one. Many of those who had read it and recommended it to me, suggested that I listen to the audiobook; I’m so glad I did. Mr. […]

Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan My rating: 4 of 5 stars “Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore” was an interesting read. It went quickly and was an enjoyable experience. He goes inside and meets the enigmatic and mysterious Mr. Penumbra. After getting the job at the bookstore, he notices that […]

I Didn’t Know Jane Austen Was So Religious

The Prayers of Jane Austen by Jane Austen

December 15, 2019 by The Chancellor Leave a Comment

The Prayers of Jane Austen by Jane Austen My rating: 5 of 5 stars I had the pleasure of finding this book at the Jane Austen House and Museum. I was surprised to see that she wrote prayers. I know Ms. Austen foremost for her books and a few of her letters, both of which I’ve read or I’ve taught. I’ve also not known established literary writers to apply their skills to writing prayers. As the daughter of an Anglican vicar, she’s poised to have […]

Thank You, LouBear!

December 14, 2019 by The Chancellor 1 Comment

A big thank you to LouBear for the great books and the bookmark! Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moren-Garcia has been on my list recently so I’m looking forward to reading it soon.  Damsel by Elana K. Arnold is new to me, but sounds like something I’d really like.  I’m excited to try something new.

Aside From Some Britishisms, It’s Basically the Same

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling

December 14, 2019 by The Chancellor Leave a Comment

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling My rating: 3 of 5 stars I heard that reading the British version of the HP series gives American readers a slightly different experience, so I decided to give it a try. It’s been at least three years since I read the first book and probably twice that since I read the later ones. What I can say is the there is definitely a much more “British” feel for the beginning of this book than I […]
