Skewer the rich

June 9, 2018 by teresaelectro 1 Comment

Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan was the April Mocha Girls Read book club selection. The story revolves around the romance between Rachel Chu and Nicholas Young. The two NY based professors are in love. Nick invites Rachel to spend the summer in Singapore with his family. Nick is the best man for his friend Colin Khoo’s wedding. The plan is to get the big event over with and travel around Asia.  Sounds fun, right? However, Nick fails to explain exactly how extensive and wealthy […]

Breath of Fire is the second book in Amanda Bouchet’s Kingmaker Chronicles series. This novel picks up moments after the end of book one with our heroine, Catalia Fisa, healing from deadly wounds. She has a knack for playing fast and loose with her life, much to the chagrin of her lover Griffin. Cat is the Kingmaker, she can detect lies from anyone. Possession of her is quite handy for anyone in power.  Cat’s mother, Alpha Fisa, would rather manipulate her powers to maintain her iron fist upon […]

Even grim reapers can be unlucky in love

May 30, 2018 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

Second Grave on the Left is Darynda Jones’ second book about Charley Davidson, full-time grim reaper and private detective. Charley doesn’t have a hood, just a gun and the ability to see dead people. She helps them cross over literally through her body as a portal to heaven. Book two begins with Cookie, Charley’s neighbor and receptionist, dragging her to a diner for a potential case. When they arrive, the client Mimi is nowhere to found, but she scrawled a name on the bathroom mirror. Suddenly, […]

A fantastical coming of age tale in space

May 3, 2018 by teresaelectro 1 Comment

When we decided to read A Wrinkle in Time for our #CannonBookClub, I was ecstatic! Perfect motivation to re-read it before the Ava Du’Vernay’s film release. Before its release, there seemed to be some negative buzz that disheartened me. I felt like I was defending the movie and the book to an extent before it hit the theaters! In the end, I managed to complete my re-read the morning before seeing the film. The refresh with the original text rekindled my childlike curiosity and sense of […]

A Road Trip from Hell

March 11, 2018 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

I’ve been slowly working my way through Kim Harrison’s urban fantasy series, The Hollows. For CBR10, I’m finally reviewing the ninth book in the series, Pale Demon. The book kicks off with the powerful witch, Rachel, and her supernatural business partners and BFFs, Jinx the pixie and Ivy the living vampire, on their way to the national witches convention in San Francisco. Rachel also needs to attend her brother’s wedding. She’s excited to see her mom at least. Of course, supernatural troubles won’t make the 2,300+ mile trek […]

A reluctant superheroine

March 11, 2018 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

Heroine Complex by Sarah Kuhn was fantastic! This is the first novel in a new series about Evie Tanaka, personal assistant and best friend to San Francisco’s number #1 superheroine, Aveda Jupiter. They have been BFFs since they were kids when Aveda was only Annie Chang. They were obsessed with a Michelle Yeoh action flick, “The Heroic Trio”, where martial arts heroes battled The Evil Master. It inspired Aveda to become a hero in real life even before a demonic portal opened up in the […]
