Hunting vampires is always a dangerous business

Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #1) by Laurell K. Hamilton

December 28, 2021 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

I’ve had Guilty Pleasures by Laurell K. Hamilton on my shelf for several years. This is the first book in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series. As a lover of vampires and urban fantasy, I have been curious since it’s been around a long time. I finally decided to pick it up for Dewey’s readathon. One of the bingo challenges was to read the oldest book on your to-be-read shelf. The story introduces us to Anita Blake who is a private investigator. She is licensed to […]

Adventures in ghost hunting

Ghost Squad by Claribel A. Ortega

December 28, 2021 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

I read Ghost Squad by Claribel A. Ortega for our Young at Heart Cannon book club. I am so glad this book came into my life. 2022 has been plagued with a few reading slumps from the pandemic. However, this middle-grade book got me back into the groove. I read the audiobook, which I highly recommend. The supernatural mystery follows two friends, Lucely and Syd, who live in St. Augustine, Florida. Lucely is Dominican-American and can see her ghost relatives. She speaks to their spirits […]

The struggle between who you are and who you want to be

The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett

December 28, 2021 by teresaelectro 1 Comment

The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett was another Mocha Girls Read pick. I definitely would not have read it without the book club impetus. To no surprise, as indicated by this annual onslaught of reviews, I procrastinated reading it. I ended up reading most of it in one day. It was well worth the time and exceeded my expectations. The novel centers on two Black twin sisters who run away from a small Black community.  The town prides itself on being a close-knit town for […]

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig has an intriguing premise of exploring potential lives. The main character Nora arrives in a mysterious library after trying to commit suicide. She is depressed and the loss of her cat sends her over the edge. The book introduces a type of time travel where Nora experiences the what-if situations from her life. She picks a book on the shelf and becomes transported into a new life where she makes a different choice. What if she stayed in her […]

I would like to join the Tea Dragon Society

The Tea Dragon Society by Kay O'Neill

December 27, 2021 by teresaelectro 2 Comments

Dome’Loki introduced me to Kay O’Neill’s The Tea Dragon Society through her Cannonball Read review. The adorable cover won me over immediately. I was so taken with it that I impulsively supported the Chamomile plush Kickstarter campaign without ever reading the books. I couldn’t decide which dragon I wanted, so I simply ordered all of them with the first book. After several months, they finally arrived and made my day! This children’s book is the first in a series. It introduces us to Greta who […]

The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin is a unique science fiction novel that brings cities to life. When a city becomes “great” a human inhabitant becomes its avatar. Except at the start of this novel, the homeless Black boy is chased into hiding. Enter the awakening of the human avatars of each of the five boroughs.
