Sweetpsychosis's Reviews:

Sharply, Darkly, Beautiful

January 29, 2014 by Sweetpsychosis 6 Comments

This magical, dark and complex book was also a gift. It came in a bag of books from a friend that I promised to take to the charity shop (I will at some point!) and it called to me from the bag like a jewel in the (Beast Quest and Goosebumps) rough. It is told from the viewpoint of fourteen-year-old Evie, who after four years is finally able to tell her adoptive parents about the shattered ribs she has kept secret. The story begins as […]

Almost Good

January 22, 2014 by Sweetpsychosis 2 Comments

To be fair this is not a bad book, it just annoyed the sweet bejesus out of me! Almost English, is Mendelson’s fourth novel, which was longlisted for the Man Booker prize last year and it is really difficult to see why! Ostensibly  it tells the story of Marina Farkas, “a 16-year-old who has recently swapped Bayswater for Dorset, and Ealing Girls’ for Combe Abbey, a boarding school replete with every single ancient ritual and socially aspirational accoutrement that its paying customers might demand.” Now surrounded by […]

If anyone can come up with a better title feel free. It was much easier when the title was the name of the book! I am assuming that anyone reading this review knows well of Harry Dresden as this is book 11, but I hate to be exclusive, so anyone reading this who doesn’t I shall nutshell it for you: PI Wizard working in modern-day chicago fighting many life and world threatening supernatural foes; wisecracking hero with big heart, think Indiana Jones has a child […]

Faultless

January 16, 2014 by Sweetpsychosis 4 Comments

It is not often that you find a perfect book. I didn’t find this one, I was told to read it by a dear friend (popcultureboy) and am very glad I did. My Sister-in-Law died young and brutally fast from a brain tumour in February 2013 and after that I was directed by well meaning souls to all sorts of ‘cancer’ books.  So at first I was a bit wary because in this book “despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few […]
