Dragon Dancing

Cute enough, but not what I was looking for

Dragon Dancing by Carole Lexa Schaefer and Pierr Morgan

January 31, 2025 by stegolily Leave a Comment

I picked this up from my school library’s weeding pile, thinking it might be good for a Lunar New Year lesson. Given the title, I assumed it would be a story about the traditional dragon dance performed during Chinese New Year celebrations. Unfortunately, the book didn’t mention China or Chinese New Year at all, nor did it contain any information about traditional celebrations. The actual story is…fine. A group of kids are creating decorations for their friend Mei Lin’s birthday (am I imagining things or […]

The Snowy Day

Two Cozy Books for Winter

The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats

Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson

January 22, 2025 by stegolily Leave a Comment

After a December that felt more like early autumn, winter weather has finally arrived at my house. So it’s time to break out some cozy winter books. This week in my classroom, we read “The Snowy Day,” and “Bear Snores On.” “The Snowy Day” is a classic for a reason. It tells the story of a little boy named Peter, and the day he spends playing in the snow. Peter makes footprints, knocks piles of snow off a tree, slides down snow piles and every […]

Grandmother's Dreamcatcher

The book that saved my family’s sleep

Grandmother's Dreamcatcher by Becky Ray McCain and Stacey Schuett

January 22, 2025 by stegolily 1 Comment

A couple of months ago my 6 year-old had a nightmare. He’s usually a pretty good sleeper, so this was unusual for him. Ever since, he has been obsessing about this dream. He’s been nervous about going to bed in case it comes back, and talks about it almost daily. In his words, “That dream changed my life, in a bad way.” My husband and I have tried special lullabies, piles of stuffies on his bed, journaling. Nothing seemed to help until my husband brought […]

"We Shall Overcome" by Debbie Levy

What I read to my students this week: Two versions of “We Shall Overcome”

We Shall Overcome: The Story of a Song by Debbie Levy and Vanessa Brantley-Newton

We Shall Overcome by Bryan Collier

January 21, 2025 by stegolily Leave a Comment

Every year around Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I teach my elementary music students the song “We Shall Overcome,” and we discuss the song’s history in conjunction with the Civil Rights Movement. I use Debbie Levy’s book, “We Shall Overcome: The Story of a Song” to introduce the song and spur a discussion. This book traces the history of the song from a spiritual sung by enslaved workers, to a hymn popular in Black churches, to a beloved freedom song of the Civil Rights movement, […]

Blessed are the dumbfucks

Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore

January 11, 2025 by stegolily 10 Comments

I first encountered this book about a decade ago. At the time, I was very Mormon and very anxious; I was aware of a lot of the problems in my lifelong faith, but terrified to face them head-on. Lamb was in the Librarian’s Choice display at the local library, and the cover art reminded me a little bit of the Discworld books, so I picked it up. As I skimmed, I was equally intrigued and horrified. A fictional book about Jesus? A comedic book about Jesus? With swears […]
