I love to read, and I love to learn. I wish I were retired so I could spend more time on my random hobbies!

Red at the Bone by Jacqueline Woodson

December 15, 2020 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I first saw Red at the Bone by Jacqueline Woodson on NPR’s Best Books of 2019 List. I’d already read Brown Girl Dreaming by Woodson and found it both impressive and challenging because of its unexpected (to me) format. It was Cannonball Bingo that cemented my decision to read Red at the Bone. I was already interested in it, and I needed a book with “Red” in the title. Of course, I was a little too slow to make this one count, but I still enjoyed it. The book begins with […]

Definitely my favorite new (to me) author

Don't You Forget About Me by Mhairi McFarlane

December 15, 2020 by Sophia 1 Comment

I enjoyed If I Never Met You so much that I knew I was going to read another book by Mhairi McFarlane very soon. And it didn’t take long before I picked up Don’t You Forget About Me (2019). I was not disappointed. McFarlane is on top of my list of favorite romance authors at the moment. Lucas and Georgina were high school sweethearts. Their burgeoning love is catalogued in the first chapter, and it is so sweet and innocent. The two are put together for a project at school, […]

The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel

December 13, 2020 by Sophia 2 Comments

I’ve seen a number of comparisons between Station Eleven and The Glass Hotel (2020) by Emily St. John Mandel. It seems that the majority of people prefer Station Eleven. I remember liking Station Eleven, but it has been so long I honestly cannot remember it well enough to compare it to The Glass Hotel. And I really liked The Glass Hotel–probably more than many of the reviews I’ve seen. The plot is kind of hard to sum up. There are a lot of characters that may overlap but don’t necessarily have too much […]

This one was mysterious and disturbing

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

December 13, 2020 by Sophia 1 Comment

My book club was looking for something short (because we were all feeling lazy), and we somehow came up with We Have Always Lived in the Castle (1962) by Shirley Jackson. I was informed that I must know Jackson from the short story The Lottery, which I must have read in high school. They didn’t believe me when I said I hadn’t read it. And when I actually read The Lottery, I was still sure I hadn’t read it in high school. The Lottery is a very disturbing short story where the village commits a […]

If I Never Met You by Mhairi McFarlane

December 12, 2020 by Sophia 1 Comment

My friend recommended If I Never Met You (2020) by Mhairi McFarlane. She said that it was a good, fun romance that involved lawyers in their thirties. Since we are both lawyers that are getting older every day, she enjoyed it and she thought I would as well. And I really did. This is definitely my favorite romance of the year, and it was even more enjoyable for me because I had no expectations coming into it. Laurie Watkinson has been with her partner Dan for half […]

A fun hate-to-love romance

Headliners by Lucy Parker

December 10, 2020 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I discovered Lucy Parker through a Cannonball review. The first book of hers I read was Act Like It, which I loved, and I’ve read all of Parker’s books ever since. I enjoyed this book, although I still think my favorite Parker book was her first. I’m finding that I enjoy these in the moment but forget them relatively quickly once I’m done. Headliners (2020) occurs in the same world as Parker’s West End theater books, and the story continues with characters we’ve already met. In fact, it […]
