Another smart woman falls in love

Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood

December 12, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a community of women trying to mind their own business must be in want of a random man’s opinion.” I’ve been working through Ali Hazelwood’s oeuvre ever since my book club chose to read The Love Hypothesis. These aren’t my favorite romance novels, but I like Hazelwood’s feminist, science-y women and the books are pretty entertaining. I’d been waiting for a while for her latest, and I was happy when I was finally able to pick up Love on the […]

“From now on, it is our task to suspect each and every one amongst us.”

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

December 11, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Everyone’s heard of Agatha Christie, and I like mysteries, so I wasn’t disappointed when our book club selected: And Then There Were None (1939). I’d read only one other Christie mystery, so I was googling it to figure out if I’d read it before when I came across some troubling information. The original British title of this book is horrendously offensive, and the original American title is only a little bit better. The premise of this murder mystery is that ten people are invited to a large […]

Unique and memorable

The Unseen World by Liz Moore

December 9, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I forget if it was me or my husband who first read Long Bright River by Liz Moore, but I do remember that I saw it on Barack Obama’s recommended reading from 2020. I was very impressed by Long Bright River, so when my husband encouraged me to read The Unseen World (2016) by Moore, I eventually got around to it. I found The Unseen World to be interesting and well written. I was surprised by how different it was from Long Bright River, but the characters and setting still felt very real. […]

I love my dog

For the Love of a Dog by Patricia B. McConnell

December 8, 2022 by Sophia 2 Comments

Since we adopted our puppy, Sadie, back in May, I’ve been reading a lot of books about dog training and dog behavior. I really enjoyed The Other End of the Leash by Patricia B. McConnell, so I figured I’d try another one by her: For the Love of a Dog. I listened to this one on audiobook, which is perhaps part of the reason I did not find it as memorable as The Other End of the Leash. For the Love of a Dog discusses whether dogs (and animals) […]

“Who knew being a heartless killing machine would present so many moral dilemmas?”

Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells

December 4, 2022 by Sophia 1 Comment

Ever since one of my friends from book club recommended All Systems Red by Martha Wells, I’ve been working my way through the six novellas in the Murderbot Diaries series. Rogue Protocol (2018) is book 3, and it follows the “Murderbot” on its adventures. So, the Murderbot is a “Secunit.” A Secunit is basically a robot with some organic parts that is built and rented out to be used for security. The Murderbot calls itself Murderbot because it was involved in some kind of mass killing spree before the […]

The details behind the politics

The Family Roe: An American Story by Joshua Prager

November 17, 2022 by Sophia 2 Comments

There’s been a lot of discussion of abortion lately–for obvious reasons. Full disclosure: I feel very strongly that the government should not force women to have unwanted children or butt into their healthcare decisions, so I was very angry about the recent Supreme Court decision. Right about that time I noticed The Family Roe: An American Story (2021) on NPR’s Best Books List. I detest the machinations of politics, and will avoid most political tomes. However, besides being familiar with the Roe v. Wade opinion (I did go to […]
