A wedding photographer who refuses to get married…

Mad About You by Mhairi McFarlane

December 18, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Mhairi McFarlane has become one of my favorite romance authors. I’m pretty sure I’ve read all of her books, and I was eagerly anticipating the publication of her latest novel, Mad About You (2022). McFarlane has a fun, engaging writing style, and I often feel more emotionally connected to her characters than other romance novels. The book begins with our protagonist–a wedding photographer–getting ready for the bride’s arrival, when the best man informs her that the groom has left. Harriet sees a bit of the aftermath of […]

A little disappointing

Luck of the Draw by Kate Clayborn

December 17, 2022 by Sophia 3 Comments

I’ve tried Kate Clayborn before when I read Love at First at a friend’s recommendation. It was all right, but I didn’t love it. So I recently decided to give Clayborn another try with Luck of the Draw (2018). I was excited because the protagonist is a lawyer who won the lottery! I was a lawyer, and I would love to win the lottery, so I figured I’d be able to relate. There were some fun parts to this book, I guess, but I also didn’t love this one. Zoe Ferris […]

I need to go back there

The Emerald Mile by Kevin Fedarko

December 17, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

“He then offered one of the most infamous pronouncements that has ever been made about the Grand Canyon: ‘Ours has been the first, and will doubtless be the last, party of whites to visit this profitless locality. It seems intended by nature that the Colorado River, along the greater portion of its lonely and majestic way, shall be forever unvisited and undisturbed.’” In October of this year, (2022) I was able to go on a rafting trip down the upper section of the Grand Canyon. […]

“But books, like people, die.”

Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr

December 14, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

My friend used to get (pre-Covid) backstage passes to an author series at the local university. Before the presentation in the auditorium, we got to meet with the author backstage. And there was even wine and appetizers! We always got a chance to talk with the author and get a signed book. It’s really very cool and not something I would be able to get tickets to by myself. Anyway, maybe the first one I went to with her was with Anthony Doerr when he […]

Birds are amazing!

The Bird Way by Jennifer Ackerman

December 14, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

An old college friend recommended The Bird Way (2020) by Jennifer Ackerman to me when I told him I’d gotten interested in bird watching. Paying attention to birds opened up a new world to me. I suddenly realized there were entire ecosystems busily living their lives all around me, but they were too far away to see clearly and moved too fast for me to follow. Now that I’ve learned a little about birds and can sometimes recognize them, it’s so exciting to see what they’re up […]

“A fairy tale for a stupid child.”

The Selection by Kiera Cass

December 14, 2022 by Sophia 2 Comments

My favorite review I found for The Selection by Kiera Cass called it a “fairy tale for a stupid child.” Kind of harsh? Maybe, maybe not. I’d never heard of this series of books until we were playing a book-related game at my wedding shower/book club where we matched up love interests from different books. I obviously did not recognize “America” and “Maxon”. My friends informed me that the character names were from The Selection, a new, popular young-adult romance novel and book one in a series. I […]
