March 4, 2021 by slisenbe Leave a Comment

Slay by @BrittneyMMorris is a YA about virtual spaces and black identity and exceptionalism. It follows a teenage game developer who creates a game that can be a safe place for black gamers. Excellent conversations on safe spaces and why they’re needed. Can’t recommend it enough.

Ring Shout: Monster Slaying KKK Fighting Awesomeness

Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark

March 4, 2021 by slisenbe Leave a Comment

Ring Shout by @pdjeliclark– short, fast-paced historical fantasy w/ a little southern gothic thrown in. It’s an exploration of hate, how it builds, consumes, and makes blind, & its destructive power in the US, especially the South. Awesome monster fighting! Highly recommend

The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander

March 4, 2021 by slisenbe Leave a Comment

The New Jim Crow @thenewjimcrow – There were a lot of things I wanted to highlight and take notes on. The hypothesis on mass incarceration being the new form of racial control in the US was incredibly compelling and well laid out. Highly recommend

Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents (audiobook)

Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson

March 4, 2021 by slisenbe Leave a Comment

Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by @Isabelwilkerson dives into its case that the US has a racial caste system with compelling empirical and anecdotal evidence. I audio-booked this and found it to be a good delivery for this book. Recommend.

Mr. Loverman (audiobook)

Mr Lover Man by Bernardine Evari

March 4, 2021 by slisenbe Leave a Comment

Mr. Loverman by @BernardineEvari was a delightful first-person novel. It follows an older man as he struggles to come out late in life/his wife as she struggles under the burden of being in a loveless marriage. Both points of view illicit dislike and sympathy. I <3 the audiobook
