My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh

August 16, 2025 by Singsonggirl Leave a Comment

Oh, I love this! Die Zeit recently included this in a “Best of the 21st Century So Far” list. Since I had an unsuccessful odyssey trying to order Lapvona earlier this year and loved Moshfegh’s introduction to this short story collection, I had to buy it. I swear that’s the reason — I’m not creepily copying Zirza’s reading list, this just keeps happening! Anyway, our young, hot, skinny and rich protagonist decides to spend a year sleeping to recalibrate her body and life, as she […]

Dark Tales Shirley Jackson

Hello Darkness My Old Friend

Dark Tales by Shirley Jackson

June 21, 2025 by Singsonggirl 4 Comments

I think I’ve found my favourite genre! It only took me 37 years (as of today)! Dark Tales is a collection of dark short stories by Shirley Jackson. They range from biting yet realistic dissections of suburban life to classic ghost stories and fever-dream-like tales with loose endings frayed as cut ribbons. My favourite stories were ‘Paranoia’, in which an ordinary businessman is hunted through the big city by mysterious figures, and ‘What a Thought’, in which a housewife experiences life- ending changing urges after […]

Two and a half cigarette men!

The Sundown Motel by Simone St. James

April 25, 2025 by Singsonggirl Leave a Comment

I saw this recommended on reddit, bought it on audible and literally the next day zirza panned it on here. Sadly, zirza was right, it’s not great. A cross between a mystery and a ghost story, The Sundown Motel tells the story of nefarious things happening in the small town of Fell, NY, where Viv Delaney disappears after her night shift at the titular motel in the 80s, while her niece Carly investigates the case in 2017. The POV switches between these two women and […]

Three and a half Golden Pippins!

At the Edge of the Orchard by Tracy Chevalier

April 11, 2025 by Singsonggirl Leave a Comment

Girl with a Pearl Earring is one of my favourite historical novels, it’s extremely well researched and although it’s completely fictional, it could very plausibly have happened as told. Remarkable Creatures falls into the same category, I loved it as well, so I was ready to read/listen to another novel by Tracy Chevalier and see what world she would bring to life this time. In At the Edge of the Orchard, the historical background is the colonization of the American West, the Gold Rush, and […]

Summer Lovin

Foxglove Summer by Ben Aaronovitch

February 6, 2025 by Singsonggirl 2 Comments

The adventure continues! I don’t remember when I stuck with a series for this long, but this is the fifth book and I’m still very much into it! This time the overarching story with the Faceless Man takes a backseat and Peter Grant is sent to the countryside to investigate the mysterious disappearance of two little girls. Nightingale conveniently has to stay back in London to guard Varvara Sidorovna, making room for another competent partner at Peter’s side: Beverly Brook, river goddess and love interest […]

Broken Towers

Broken Homes by Ben Aaronovitch

January 5, 2025 by Singsonggirl Leave a Comment

First of all, I’m really happy to be back and looking forward to doing this this year! My reading outside of work has been abysmal lately, so I’ve decided to join Cannonball Read again to have more motivation. The one thing that worked last year, despite the general slacking off, were audiobooks, or better, one series of audiobooks: I’ve fallen into the Rivers of London series and the combination of Ben Aaronovitch’s writing and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith’s voice acting is just excellent. I’ve just finished the […]
