This review is for the audiobook version of Rooms, by Lauren Oliver. This isn’t a book I probably would have come across on my own, but sometimes I trust the Overdrive algorithm and choose a book based on its recommendations for me, and occasionally it works out. This was one of those books. The story revolves around a house, one that has seen life, death, love, and sorrow. It has also absorbed a couple of ghosts, both women who had lived and died in […]
My Kind of Vacation
Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell
This review is for the audiobook version of Assassination Vacation, by Sarah Vowell. I love history. It was my favorite subject in school. I’ve always seen it as a series of stories, twisted together and linked past to present, leading us to where we are now, not just a list of wars, dates, and names. Those names were people, they lived and loved, they worked, fought, and died. Some we know about, most we don’t, but I love reading and learning about the stories […]
The Bleakest PNR I’ve Ever Read
This review is for the audiobook version of Working Stiff by Rachel Caine, the first in the Revivalist series. Bryn Davis was killed on her first day at her new job as a funeral director after discovering that her new boss was selling a black market drug that could bring the dead back to life. After receiving a dose of the top secret drug she joins forces with the team trying to keep it out of the wrong hands. There’s the expected skulking around, spy […]
“Coen Brothers meet Carl Hiaasen”
This one-liner on the cover describes this audiobook perfectly: “The Coen Brothers meet Carl Hiaasen.” If that sounds good, this might be the series for you! The first book, Plugged, introduced us to Irish soldier-turned-New Jersey-bouncer Daniel McEvoy, and the second starts right where we left him, in a bit of a mess with “Plastic Paddy” Mike Madden, trying to figure out his relationship with his delusional sort-of-girlfriend, annoyed with the most annoying best friend in the world, and revamping his casino and nightclub. As […]
Capital Dames
This review is for the audiobook version of Civil War Dames. I enjoyed listening to this book, but I did have a hard time following the timeline. It was difficult to know when she was quoting the women and when she was summarizing. I also had a hard time keeping track of whose story she was telling. I understand the need to go back and forth between the women as time progressed, rather than telling each story fully and repeating the benchmark events, but […]
I’m trying to write positive reviews, I promise!
The Forgotten Room is the fourth book in a series about “enigmologist” Jeremy Logan. It’s a bit predictable, but still enjoyable. It does get a bit gruesome (I gasped out loud and said “nononononono” more than once) so if you don’t like reading gore, I’d skip this one. I also recommend skipping if you know a lot about the human brain, since some of the science fiction parts were a bit hard for me to swallow. We start in Scotland, where Logan is holding a […]
