This review is for the audiobook versions of the Dark Sword series by Donna Grant. I listened to the six novels (I would assume more audiobooks are on the way) consecutively over a couple of weeks. I needed something light and escapist, and historical-paranormal-romance seemed like a good fit. I wouldn’t recommend listening to several books by the same author this quickly, as pet phrases will begin to grate, and you might notice small, annoyingly repetitive details more than you would otherwise. As you […]
Another Series To Be Obsessed With
Once again, the Overdrive algorithm picked me a winner. Emily is a young Victorian woman fed up with her mother’s demands and criticism. To get out from under her thumb she marries the next man to propose, despite barely knowing him. A few months into their marriage, Lord Ashton goes on Safari with friends, and never returns. Mourning a man she hardly knew rubs Emily the wrong way, so she sets out to learn more about him, uncovering a ring of art thieves and forgers […]
Good Premise But Boring
This review is for the audiobook version of Nightshifted by Cassie Alexander, read by Tai Sammons . This wasn’t very good, but it was fine for trying to get to sleep. The premise is interesting, but I didn’t find the characters compelling. Edie Spence is a nurse working at County Hospital in the “special” ward in exchange for a magical entity keeping her brother off drugs. She encounters all kinds of creatures in need of medical attention: vampires, shape shifters, were-beasts, and zombies, to […]
Welcome Uninvited Guests
This review is for the audiobook version of The Uninvited, by Cat Winters read by ?. This book took me a while to get into, slumped a bit in the middle, and then got better at the twist (which I should have seen coming) and ended fabulously. We begin with Ivy Rowan waking from being with with the Spanish Influenza, during the first World War, to find her father and brother have killed a German man that lives in their town. The Rowan women have […]
The Devil’s Breath
This review is for the audio book version of The Devil’s Breath, a Thomas Silkstone mystery, by Tessa Harris, read by Simon Vance. This book was perfectly pleasant, not too taxing, quite entertaining, perfect to listen to while walking or sewing, or whatever you prefer to do while listening to audiobooks. We pick up where we left Thomas and Lydia at the end of the second novel: looking for her son. As they follow young Richard’s trail, a mysterious notary is one step ahead of […]
Sometimes I Wish We Knew More About Shakespeare
This review is for the audiobook version of Haunt Me Still, by Jennifer Lee Carrell, narrated by Katherine Kellgren. If you aren’t a fan of Shakespeare or worried about historical accuracy but are looking for a rolling adventure story, this is the book for you. If, however, you like Shakespeare and have any kind of background understanding of the Tudor period, you probably won’t like it much. The adventure runs along, barely stopping for a breath, across oceans and centuries, with lives depending on an […]
