Oldies But Goodies

The Fantastic and Forgotten, edited by Judika Illes (2016) – Usually when I review anthologies, I summarize individual stories and give an overall judgement, but this anthology is such a unique concept, I must discuss the entire anthology as a whole. First of all, I’d never heard of Weiser Books who published this anthology.  They publish occult, esoteric, speculative, and New Age works.  This collection, however, publishes stories of forgotten authors from the 1800s, mostly English, and includes such surprising (and not forgotten) authors such […]

Is That A Ray Gun in your Pocket…

Redline the Stars by Andre Norton and P.M. Griffin (1993) – It’s always hit or miss with these “Andre Norton and” novels.  Sometimes, I have the feeling Ms. Norton merely glanced at the story as it was being written by someone else.  Other times, I think she had a great deal of input.   Her last solo novel was written in 2005.  While this one was really a good story, I didn’t get many Andre Norton vibes off of it (although she wrote the book’s intro).  […]

Though She Walks Through the Valley of Death

Deathweave by Cary G. Osborne (1998) – I’ll start this review with a disclaimer: Cary Osborne is a friend of mine, and I’ve visited her critique group in Oklahoma City and attended workshops with her.  I’d never read one of her professionally published (Ace Books) before so I was excited when Bothari43 and I found one of her out of print books while shopping in Marietta, Georgia. If you like strong female leads and exciting space opera, this is the book for you.  Arden, the […]

Second Time Around

Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey (2011) – It’s terrible getting halfway through a 750-page book and realizing you’ve read it before.  The good news is that the story is so good that I didn’t care.  I like a good spaceship crew story and this one combines space opera with a good mystery and a love story. The story is told by the two strong male protagonists, Miller, an alcoholic policeman on Ceres, and Holden, an executive officer aboard an ice mover.  When Holden’s ship […]

Hot Off the Presses

Crimson Son 2 by Russ Linten (2017) – It’s not often I have the opportunity to review a book before it’s published, but I was a Beta reader for this book, so I thought I’d kill two birds with one stone and give the author this review since it’s officially out there now. In the first book, Crimson Son, we’re introduced to the world of Crimson Mask.  It’s a world very similar to ours except that governments have created super-powered heroes called Augments.  But we’re […]

Short and Sweet

July 18, 2017 by sabian30 1 Comment

Alien Dimensions #9, edited by Neil A. Hogan (2017) – This anthology is short and sweet.  At barely 76 pages, it covers a broad range of clever science fiction short stories.  Whether you’re into sentient forests or the real extraterrestrial reason behind having an orange ape in the White House, this collection might be for you. “Wandering Woods” by Gustavo Bondoni – Intriguing tale of a planet completely overrun by electronic trash and the sole sentient forest that asks for terraforming help before it’s too […]
