Because of Miss Bridgerton by Julia Quinn

July 21, 2022 by RaRaGabor Leave a Comment

Every once in a very great while, I enjoy a romance novel of the Harlequin variety. My mom used to read them when I was a kid (and she had at least one very awkward convo with my precocious-reader-self about how those books were not appropriate for me to read (even if left lying around) (and spoiler alert: her reasons only made me more curious)), and my college roommate would occasionally spend a Sunday procrastinating from all her schoolwork by tearing through some truly ridiculous […]

All that She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack, a Black Family Keepsake by Tiya Miles

July 20, 2022 by RaRaGabor Leave a Comment

This book was fascinating, and very different from what I expected. In the 1850s South Carolina, a young enslaved girl, Ashley, was sold away from her mother. Ashley’s mother, Rose, packed a sack for Ashley to take, containing “a tattered dress 3 handfulls of pecans a braid of Roses hair. Told her It be filled with my Love always”. Two generations later, Ruth Middleton, Ashley’s granddaughter, embroidered text onto the sack explaining its contents and significance. Miles uses each of the items in the sack, […]

The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown

July 15, 2022 by RaRaGabor Leave a Comment

Sooooooo, if you haven’t read any Brene Brown, I highly recommend her. Brown is a PhD who studies shame and vulnerability as a research professor at UT Austin. She has also written a number of books that straddle the line between self help and leadership. I came to her books through professional development: I wanted to become a better leader in my professional life, and her book Dare to Lead was suggested to me by my boss. One book in and I was officially hooked. […]

Did she or didn’t she…?

Blood Sugar by Sascha Rothchild

July 14, 2022 by RaRaGabor 3 Comments

Once again, I’ve been reading like crazy but slacking on my reviews. Time to clear the backlog! I don’t follow many authors on social media, but I do follow Zoje Stage’s Instagram. When she gave Blood Sugar a glowing review, I immediately added it to my TBR. The book begins with a brief, but very unsettling prologue. It’s not immediately clear what’s happening, but when you figure it out…! Let’s just say you also figure out what kind of book this is going to be, […]

If your therapist started writing chick-lit, this is what you’d get.

Things You Save In A Fire by Katherine Center

June 18, 2022 by RaRaGabor Leave a Comment

This is the second Katherine Center book I’ve read. My book club read How To Walk Away a couple years ago. It was fine! Not my usual cup of tea, but we actually had a good discussion around disability, the ethics that therapists should/do follow, etc. I thought Things You Save In A Fire might be a good addition for the Beach Reads presentation that I’m doing for work. Cassie Hanwell is a 26 year old fire fighter. She’s also a rising star in the […]

“Having [the kids] in a confined space after traveling for thirty-six hours was like chain-smoking in a fireworks factory.”

We Came, We Saw, We Left: A Family Gap Year by Charles Wheelan

June 17, 2022 by RaRaGabor Leave a Comment

I really love a good travel book. I also love to actually travel, but armchair travel is much more cost effective! We Came, We Saw, We Left is a travel book, but it’s also a family book, which had both pros and cons. The Wheelans, or “Team Wheelan,” as Charles often dubs them, are an upper-middle-class family from Hanover, NH. The father is a professor at Dartmouth, the mother is a school teacher/administrator, and the three children range in age from 13 – 18. I […]
