Words as Weapons

October 19, 2015 by Quorren 3 Comments

This book’s masterful use of language makes everything I write about it seem pale in insubstantial.  I don’t have the words to say how beautifully McEwan put words together.  The words are good in this one, guys!  The words! Part of the reason I loved this one so much is how I related to young Briony.  A lot of times, people think kids are dumb (and they kind of are, even scientifically because the lobes are still forming), but that doesn’t mean they don’t have […]

Waiting for Lifetime to Buy The Rights

October 18, 2015 by Quorren Leave a Comment

I mean, this book has love triangles, ghosts calling from beyond the grave, obsession, murder, even a Nice Guy (TM)!  It’s not high literature, but it was fun.  Its sincerity even got me hooked into caring about the characters, instead of the detached irony I was originally reading with. Isa was sent to live with her cousin, Alette, in South Africa.  Where Isa was shy and introverted, Alette was talkative and charming.  Growing up, they managed to lucid dream together, until Isa grew too scared […]

Just Go Rewatch True Detective

October 18, 2015 by Quorren Leave a Comment

After being wowed by True Detective, I remember that somewhere I had a Pizzolatto book, begging to be read.  After I hunted it down, I settled in to be lead into another world on mystery and murder in the South.  Instead, I got disappointment, barely sketched out characters and casual misogyny.  (Granted, this is Pizzolatto’s first foray into writing, but it’s still hard to bridge this first outing to the nuance and character development of True Detective Season 1). Our manly man, Roy, works for […]

Bruised Violet, You Got This Squid Thing That Follows Me Around

October 14, 2015 by Quorren 2 Comments

You all went out and bought Volume 1 of Rat Queens after my last review, right?  (Or, if you are narfna, you demanded that your library supply you with it, because who really stocks a library with only volume 2 of something?!)  I’m going to pretend that you all did, because I want to believe you are wonderful people that love nice things and it would break my heart to find out you were apathetic about my Rat Queens. If it’s possible, this volume managed […]

Yes, I Would Like A Sexy, Witty Druid with a Talking Wolfhound, Please

October 13, 2015 by Quorren 3 Comments

If I ever got into the deity business, I’d want to be the lesser goddess of good timing and curating – like, your iPod would always be ready with the perfect song to score your life moments or I would sneak into your bedroom at night and if you left me bookmarks and/or teeth under your pillow, I’d deliver a book perfectly curated for your tastes.  I would also indirectly use my divine intervention  by guiding the Barnes and Nobles workers’ staff picks.  Alas, I […]

Rebel Girl, You are the (Rat) Queen of My World

October 7, 2015 by Quorren 5 Comments

Everyone knows that Saga is the best new graphic novel in ages.  It is known.  And I know everyone is going to accuse me of taking crazy pills, BUT…I think Rat Queens may be even better than Saga. (In my own completely factual and not at all subjective opinion.)  But, they are both part of Image Comics, which is quickly becoming the most innovative and inclusive of all the comic book houses.  Seriously, Image Comics has cornered the market on interesting, bad ass, multi-dimensional women […]
