The Amazon link will take you to the book that I read, but i feel I should mention, if you do want to give this book a go, you might want to get the revised edition. The first edition was written in the early aughts, right before social media explosion, and I assume that might change a bit of Simmons’ theories. (I can’t completely vouch for the revised edition, I haven’t read it, but this edition was quite good, so I imagine the revised one […]
Play in Traffic, Run with Scissors, Set Yourself on Fire…
There are many, many, many other things you can do other than read this book. I suggest all of them. Yes, even the ones that may end in death and dismemberment. I feel bad for shitting on this book, just after reviewing Station Eleven and all its “ars gratia artis” and to art is to human feel good messages. But… This book is not good. I mean, I’m not the sole decider of what is and is not art. I went to MoMA last year […]
Where’s the Queue Forming for the ‘Survival is Insufficient’ Tattoo?
Getting this in just under the wire for tomorrow. Hopefully I have some time tomorrow to jump into the discussion. Or lurk. I’m good at lurking. I’m sure by now, most know the basic premise of this book – deadly flu wipes out a lot of the population and years later, humanity is still trying to survive. As far as dead horses and the beating there of, it’s a genre that’s been heavily explored, especially if you count zombie apocalypses into the equation. But for […]
These Pink Ladies Don’t Need Any T Birds
What if girls weren’t made of sugar and spice? Or, maybe sugar and cayenne pepper? Through happenstance at my library’s last book sale, I found this book and then in another bin, I found a nonfiction book focusing on the hidden culture of female aggression. So dust off your Jagged Little Pill CD or any other angry girl rock you have and let’s go burn down the patriarchy together. (I’ll get the review up for the nonfiction book at…some point. I got behind on my […]
Saved by the Art
I wanted so badly to like this book. Jen Wang’s artwork is so fantastic and it’s pretty much the sole reason I gave it three stars instead of two. It’s a graphic novel with realistically drawn women/girls, it’s got a message, it’s about gaming; in theory, it’s everything I should love. Doctorow starts off with a great introduction that really resonated with me. The internet has revolutionized modern day communication! (Yeah! The internet has cat pictures and stuff!) With the internet, we now have so […]
Lots of Peacocking at the Peacock Network
On the one hand, there’s quite a few tasty tidbits of gossip included in this book; celebrity gossip is my vice. On the other hand, there’s also a lot of pompous self-promoting mixed with some super sour grapes. I think I liked the book, but I’m not sure I liked the people involved. Top of the Rock is a history of NBC in the 90s, written in the oral tradition. Many people involved on NBC’s breakout shows – Seinfeld, Friends, Frasier – have their say, […]
