Where I am suddenly unable to overcome my self-aimed prejudices

Happy Fat: Taking Up Space in a World that wants to Shrink You by Sofie Hagen

February 8, 2021 by postcardsandbooks Leave a Comment

Happy Fat by Sophie Hagen is part memoir, part manifesto. The Danish comedienne breaks down fatphobia and invites us to join the fat liberation movement, both by telling us about her own experiences and by interviewing others. She is funny and minces no words and I should have absolutely loved this book. But here is the thing: reading this book was a supremely uncomfortable experience for me. And this is why: 6 months ago, I was “morbidly obese” according to my BMI measurement (which is one […]

Well hello there, Murderbot!

All Systems Red by Martha Wells

February 6, 2021 by postcardsandbooks 2 Comments

So I should preface this with: despite my review of the Forward collection a couple of weeks ago, I am NOT a sci-fi fan. Some of the worst books I ever remember reading are different types of sci-fi. I am looking at you: Annihilation trilogy, Red Rising, This is how you lose the time war. Sidenote: I just went back on my Goodreads and these are all the sci-fi books I read over the last 4 years and I hated them all. 🙁 Enter Murderbot. […]

I need to read more queer YA contemporaries

Loveless by Alice Oseman

February 4, 2021 by postcardsandbooks 6 Comments

So, here is the thing: I really need to read more YA contemporary. I mean, really. I had no idea I would love this that much. Loveless tells the story of Georgia Warr, a girl who is very much in love with the idea of love (through books and movies and fan fiction) but has never had a crush herself. But fear not, she is off to uni with her 2 best friends, and that is the time when everything will change, and she will […]

How late was I to discover Booktube?

The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson

The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson

The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson

February 1, 2021 by postcardsandbooks 3 Comments

I tend to be very chatty, so please skip ahead to each book for the individual reviews if you do not want TMI about my life. 🙂 So clearly, I have lived under a rock for the past 10 years or so. There is no other explanation for why it took a pandemic for me to realize people actually made videos about books and posted them online. I’ve been reading reviews on Goodreads and blogs and Amazon/Audible before buying books for years, but never did […]

Amazon’s Forward Collection is half-apocalyptic, half Black Mirror

Emergency Skin by N.K. Jemisin

Ark by Veronica Roth

Rand0m1ze by Andy Weir

You Have Arrived at Your Destination by Amor Towles

The Last Conversation by Paul Tremblay

Summer Frost by Blake Crouch

January 28, 2021 by postcardsandbooks Leave a Comment

So I downloaded the 6 novellas that make up Amazon’s new Forward Collection, which appears to be a collection of sci-fi short stories by known authors (even though I have never anything by most of them). You can read them for free if you’re a Prime customer. I decided I will read them one each morning over a week and review them as I read them, but wait to post all reviews in one post. I will do it this way because these are short, and […]

Great concept, less then stellar execution

A Castle in England by Jamie Rhodes

January 23, 2021 by postcardsandbooks Leave a Comment

So this was an exciting find for me. I actually got this book at Poundland for all of £1. The idea is fascinating – it is a book about Scotney Castle’s history, in Kent, from 1381 to 1923, told through comics / short stories. All stories are inspired by real existing evidence and correspondence found in the castle. There are 5 comics for different eras: the Medieval era is represented by The Labourer, the story of the Peasant’s Revolt (1381); the Elizabethan era is portraited by […]
