About pixifer

I'm an avid reader working on my second official Cannonball. My favorite genres are mystery, horror, fantasy, and SciFi, but I'll read almost anything that won't make me cry. When I'm not reading, I'm probably being held down by cats. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: pixifer's Quick Questions interview.)

The Secret, Book, and Scone Society is a good mystery but maybe not for me

The Secret, Book, and Scone Society by Ellery Adams

January 29, 2020 by pixifer Leave a Comment

The Secret, Book, and Scone Society is a cozy mystery about four women trying to solve a murder in the small town of Miracle Springs, North Carolina. The water from Miracle Springs is reported to have healing powers so people flock to the town. The main character, Nora Pennington, owns the local bookstore and is a “bibliotherapist”. As a bibliotherapist, Nora listens to her customers’ troubles and then prescribes a series of books. If the books are read in the prescribed order, they should help […]

I think I liked Ruby Red but I don’t think it’s a very good book

Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier

January 22, 2020 by pixifer Leave a Comment

Ruby Red is a young adult novel about a 16 year old girl who learns she has the time travel gene when she suddenly travels back in time. All her life, Gwyneth thought her cousin Charlotte had inherited the gene. Everyone did. Charlotte is beautiful, poised, and intelligent, all of the things Gwyneth doesn’t think she is. While Charlotte has spent the last ten years learning dancing, fencing, history, and languages, Gwyneth has been a normal kid, hanging out with friends, watching movies, and doing […]

Parts of Gulp are hard to swallow

Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal by Mary Roach

January 22, 2020 by pixifer Leave a Comment

I love Mary Roach’s books. They’re funny and irreverent and very educational. Her use of ridiculous footnotes rivals that of Gaiman’s and Pratchett’s Good Omens. So I had really high hopes for Gulp when I first picked it up a few years ago.  Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal is about the human digestive tract, from the mouth all the way down to the exit. It discusses how smell affects taste, the roles of saliva, why poop smells and attempts to make it not smell, […]

The Haunting of Rookward House is my new favorite Darcy Coates novel

The Haunting of Rookward House by Darcy Coates

January 16, 2020 by pixifer Leave a Comment

The Haunting of Rookward House is a creepy horror novel and it’s the first book in a while to actually scare me. Main character Guy is down on luck. He’s living with his mom and unable to find a job. While helping Mom clean out the attic, he discovers the deed to Rookward House, which Mom doesn’t really remember inheriting. Mom seems a bit ditsy. Guy immediately decides that selling Rookward House is the answer to their problems as it will give them enough money […]

Something Read Something Dead puts the cozy in a beach wedding murder

Something Read Something Dead by Eva Gates

January 9, 2020 by pixifer Leave a Comment

Something Read Something Dead is the fifth book in the Lighthouse Library series by Eva Gates. This review is partly for Something Read Something Dead and partly for the series overall.  The Lighthouse Library series is about thirty-something librarian Lucy Richardson who flees her native Boston after her boyfriend proposes. Lucy moves to the Outer Banks of North Carolina where her mother’s family lives. Growing up, she spent every summer on the Outer Banks with her mom’s family, and says it is her favorite place […]
