Romance re-read

Copper Beach by Jayne Ann Krentz

July 16, 2022 by persnickety chick Leave a Comment

So in a bit of a re-read moment currently. It’s winter, it’s cold and work is stressful. I quite enjoy Jayne Ann Krentz’s books, across all of her names, so they are often a comfortable re-read.  There are some definite tics though, which are more apparent when one binges.  Things that often happen: Heroine has no family/dead family/family that are not supportive/supportive family that don’t understand her.  I have yet to read one of her novels where the heroine has a completely supportive and in […]

Bad decisions, good book

Brooklynaire by Sabrina Bowen

June 25, 2022 by persnickety chick 2 Comments

This is a happy review, but a story of poor decisions.  I bought one of those compilation books from amazon – you know the 20 books for 99 cents ones, lots of authors.  I did buy it because I get promotional emails from the author of the book  I am talking about.  With these compilations there are generally a couple of cliffhanger teaser books, intended to suck you in, a couple of meh books and one or two books that are great.  Brooklynaire is […]

Frantically trying to catch up

The midwinter mail-order bride by Kati Wilde

June 20, 2022 by persnickety chick 5 Comments

It’s been a weird year.  I foolishly thought i would have a lot of reading time in January and February and then i got Covid.  I did read, but writing was a step too far.  Then i started a grad course in Internal audit and risk management.  Which has been interesting, but my final assessment is in, so in order to distract me from crippling anxiety about passing, i shall attempt to write some book reviews. I think i grabbed this book because a SBTB […]

Suicide mission- drama and heroics

Clockwork Boys by T. Kingfisher

The Wonder Engine by T. Kingfisher

December 29, 2021 by persnickety chick 1 Comment

These two books form a duopoly – the Clocktaur war.  They are set in a fantasy world, which is well drawn and clearly has activities beyond what happens in this story. The premise of the story is that two countries/city states are at war.  Or rather, one city is sending strange machines that destroy everything towards the other city.  These are the Clockwork boys- mechanical things that appear to be made of bone, are covered with gears, and are very difficult to stop.  The front […]

Old friends

Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett

Men at Arms by Terry Pratchett

Jingo by Terry Pratchett

December 27, 2021 by persnickety chick 2 Comments

I have been listening to these three books on audio on repeat all year.  It has been an anxiety filled couple of years and I have found audio books at night help me shut down the worry voice in my head. I know the stories so well it doesn’t matter if i have missed pieces along the way. The rereads have reinforced my understanding of Pratchett as a great writer and observer of humanity.  There are likely to be unintended spoilers, as i have read […]

What would you do to change your past

The future of another timeline by Annalee Newitz

December 8, 2021 by persnickety chick Leave a Comment

The future of another timeline is a time travel book. It is also a book about the ongoing struggle for equal rights. It starts in 1992, from the perspective of a time traveller who has returned to an important moment in her past, and an opportunity to change something about her past. The book is told in alternate chapters between Tess- the traveler, and Beth – the girl for whom 1992 is her current life. There are 5 Machines, that enable time travel, provided certain […]
