A Future I Can Believe In

The Terraformers by Annalee Newitz

August 16, 2023 by Owlizabeth Leave a Comment

I seem to be having a bit of a #scifisummer and it has been so fun and refreshing, even when it’s tense and complicated. Sometimes the chaos goblin who runs my brain at the library is on the right track, and I’ve had some excellent grabs recently. Rocketing straight to the top of the list (get it? rockets?? science fiction???? you’re welcome), is this bonkers beauty that I finished this morning and cannot stop thinking about. In short, we’re about 50,000 years in the future, […]

Twistin the Night Away

The Skeleton Key by Erin Kelly

August 10, 2023 by Owlizabeth 3 Comments

Last night, I woke up at 3:30 with a warm flush (being a middle aged woman is aces, y’all) and as I was fanning myself on the sofa, I grabbed my book for the usual 20 minutes or so until my temperature made sense again. I’d been reading this for a couple of days, and I was liking it but I didn’t think it’s be a problem to set it back down and so I could finish getting my night’s sleep. Reader, I’m sure you […]

My Kind of Western

Upright Women Wanted by Sarah Gailey

July 25, 2023 by Owlizabeth Leave a Comment

This novella has been sitting on my kindle forever and I don’t know why it took me this long to read it but I’m so glad I finally did! I think I’ve talked before about my struggles with short fiction, I always want more. This one wasn’t any different. I don’t know if reading any of Gailey’s other novellas would help clear up some of the background on this story. It’s set in a dystopian America torn apart by war with most people reduced to […]

Sometimes the Hype is Real

Yellowface by R. F. Kuang

July 23, 2023 by Owlizabeth 5 Comments

I don’t love reading books that have all the buzz. The ones on all of the must read most anticipated best of lists. That get picked for all of the book clubs. I’m not inherently opposed to popularity. If anything, I find myself too swayed by all of the opinions. I’m overcritical or underwhelmed usually. It helps if I let some time pass, so it doesn’t feel so in my face. Library hold lists make this easier. My hold for Yellowface came in and I […]

Summer Blahs

Wings Once Cursed & Bound by Piper J. Drake

July 20, 2023 by Owlizabeth Leave a Comment

This has not been the most awesome reading summer for me so far. My attention span has been unreliable for a variety of reasons and it’s been difficult finding a book to really hold my focus. I’ve got a support stack of library books I’ve been carting from room to room, simply to ignore in favor of mindless freemium mom games. So, with all that said, I’m glad I finally finished something, even if it was more effort to push through than it should have […]

Camp Half-Blood 4 Life (Percy Jackson and the Olympians series review)

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan

The Titan’s Curse by Rick Riordan

The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan

The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan

July 1, 2023 by Owlizabeth Leave a Comment

I read this series when it was originally published and didn’t think about it much after I’d finished. I liked it, yes, but it wasn’t a new obsession for me and I never really planned on revisiting Percy’s world. Then I watched the teaser for the Disney+ show coming out next year and checked them out from the library and that’s how I spent my last two weeks. The series follows Percy Jackson, who finds out he’s a demigod, the son of Poseidon and a […]
