I have been listening to The Wheel of Time for four solid months. That’s how long it takes to get through this behemoth. Over 400 hours of audio, seriously. So, yes, a commitment and a challenge. Worth it? I’m gonna go with ABSOLUTELY. This was not my first time trying to tackle The Masterpiece. I’ve read Eye of the World probably five times, and the furthest I’d gotten in the series was into the sixth book, but fatigue/ADHD/life got in the way of my previous […]

I became a SJM fangirl with A Court of Mist and Fury. I’d read A Court of Thorns and Roses and thought it was decent “girl fantasy” – by which I meant the main protagonist was a young woman and the main plot revolved around a love story (now we’re calling it “romantasy” which I love and loathe in equal measures) – but nothing too amazing. Then Mist and Fury came out and I was hooked. I loved how Maas handled Feyre’s trauma, depression, and […]

Aliens Everywhere

On Earth As It Is On Television by Emily Jane

The Seep by Chana Porter

November 9, 2023 by Owlizabeth Leave a Comment

I loved both of these books. They are both technically science fiction, in that they both deal with alien invasions. But like the best scifi, the stories are less about aliens and more about what makes us human. In Emily Jane’s On Earth As It Is On Television, the ships show up, hover for a day or so, and then just leave. What follows is a bit of a wacky adventure, featuring cats as main characters and an average dad just trying to hold it together […]

I Feed Her To the Beast and the Beast Is Me by Jamison Shea

October 19, 2023 by Owlizabeth 1 Comment

It has been nearly a month since I finished this book and I’ve been attempting to write this in a back corner of my mind since then. I still don’t know how to say exactly what I want to say, but I must say something so here goes. THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING MIND BLOWING STARTLINGLY ORIGINAL AND TOUCHING AND NOW YOU SHOULD READ IT. Damn, that word count isn’t enough. Let’s do better. I Feed Her… came to my attention through social media, an author […]

More Lady Killers, Please

Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn

September 13, 2023 by Owlizabeth 1 Comment

I am so excited about this book, y’all. I’ve been gushing about it in all my book-related chats since I started listening to it. I set it aside yesterday with about 80% finished because I wanted it to last just a little bit longer. It has been an exciting and fun escape during the awful end of summer break. A team of female assassins are set to retire and to celebrate, their employers “The Museum” have sent them on a fancy shmancy cruise. While sitting […]

What Are We?

Culture: The Story of Us by Martin Puchner

August 17, 2023 by Owlizabeth Leave a Comment

This was another library impulse grab in my mission to read more non-fiction and I’m glad I made it through! Using key moments and figures, Martin Puchner lays out a brief sketch of human culture over the millennia. Which, you know, huge task! He focuses on times of cultural exchange, whether willing or not, and how we are constantly borrowing, assimilating, and rediscovering who we are. The examples he chooses are diverse and not just the frogmarch of Western Civ that would have us believe […]
