First I got up, then I had a piece of toast…

There’s a stand up comedian who had a bit about how boring it is to hear about other peoples’ dreams, how the description is always surreal to the teller but just illogical to the listener; the punch line being “there’s a reason you were asleep for this.” There’s a reason your books were inspired by rather than directly published from your diaries, sedaris. It kind of hurt to write that. I love David Sedaris, I love his writing. I often say of writers I love […]

I’m surprised this book exists even having loved it.

Not counting my repurchased copy of Good Omens procured from Goodwill, this may be my favorite book bought for a dollar.  I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I’m also not confused how it ended up in the dollar bin.  This thing may have sprung fully formed from my mind, it’s so weirdly tailored to my interests. The book explores the nature of food related trends – as the tag line says, “why we’re crazy about cupcakes but fed up with fondue” – and the means by […]

Five characters in search of an exit

February 6, 2018 by octothorp Leave a Comment

I’m… I am really striking out on books lately, guys. This felt less like brooks had a cogent thesis he was working toward with examples citing his ideas, and more that he had read a lot about the historical figures involved and wanted to write a book about them whether or not they made sense together. The unifying theme, such as it is, revolves around humility.  These people, from Dwight Eisenhower to George Sand are exemplars I’d moral rectitude by virtue of their disciplined ego. […]

That’s not funny, that’s tedious

February 6, 2018 by octothorp Leave a Comment

… I wanted this to be better. Gene Siskel had a line about whether a movie was preferable to the equivalent amount of time spent staring at a blank wall.  I seriously had to take breaks from this even though my phone was dying and I was pinned under a sleeping baby; my alternative was literally a blank wall and I had to think about it. I don’t want to complain too much about the recitation of the National Lampoon’s best bits in this book, […]

Ineffable

February 5, 2018 by octothorp 3 Comments

Ive been trying to read down the pile of unread books in my library, and this necessitated eating my literary vegetables, so to speak – the stuff that’s not fun or that I’ve put off for one reason or another until I forgot why I bought the damn thing to begin with – some of which weren’t even nutritious, to torture the metaphor. It was cake time, muffukkas. This was my eleventy billionth reading of this book and it never fails to make me smile. […]

How many marshmallows do I get for having finished the book

February 5, 2018 by octothorp Leave a Comment

As I’ve stated in many a review, pop sociology and behavioral economics books are like catnip to me.  I’ve purchased too many to count because I love reading about secondary consequences, and this seemed to fit the mold – a study on willpower and strategies to delay gratification morphing into a long term predictor of future success? Yes please! The problem is that instead of focusing on that one study, the author uses it as one of many to demonstrate that inner discipline is predictive […]
