Here, have a review about two recent (ish) stand alones by the ever popular and uber-prolific Nora Roberts. Of whom I am a huge, unashamed fan. Her books are often comfort reads for me – I know somewhere, in the midst of whatever nonsense is flourishing, there will some sort of happy ending, and that’s reassuring in a way I can’t really explain. Other readers complain about the formulaic nature of some of Roberts’ work (particularly when it comes to trilogies), but – for me, […]
The Complicated Lives of Simple People
In leaving the ground, he left all of the craziness behind. Nothing could touch him, no hatred, no rumors, no law. If only it were possible to just keep flying, on and on until the land turned into ocean and back to land again. If only he could go far enough to be certain what was left behind him never caught up. Susan Crandall’s The Flying Circus is an adventure story at heart – in true ‘running away to join the circus’ vein – […]
Setting up for the sequel
“Suddenly I’m seeing exactly how vulnerable our city really is. I feel as if the ground beneath me cracks open like an earthquake and swallows my childhood fairytale of stability, safety, and security, of everything I’ve trusted my future into.” If you’re a fan of the genre, you know that there’s a ton of really well written, dystopic fiction – particularly in the Young Adult section of your local library – and it often makes its way to your local theater. Everything from kids […]
Do not try to sing the title to the tune of “The Circle of Life”
It’s weird, sometimes, how much other people’s stories can mean to you. It’s part of the reason I love reading (good) memoirs – coming across that one story, that one line in their tale, that hits you right in the heart, or the head, or rings some distant memory bell of your own. The thing that makes you see that people – with all their infinite indiviualities – still have so many little points of connection. And that’s how I felt reading The Story of […]
Excellent – could use more Batgirl, though.*
I’ve never been patient enough to be a religious comic book reader – With the pace I read at, where one issue won’t last 10 minutes, the idea of waiting for the next issue was often enough to keep me from picking up the current issue – but I still like comics. I like the subtle and outright humor; I like the artistry; I like the continuing plot-lines (once there’s enough of a backlog for me to read a bunch of them at once). And […]
Best kind of accident, I suppose.
The aptly titled Accidentally In Love, is a contemporary romance set somewhere in the middle of author Laura Drewry’s Friends First series. Since I got my copy from NetGalley, I wasn’t aware I was jumping in in the middle of a series, but it’s pretty easy to tell that the pre-paired couples’ stories must have already been told in the previous books. You don’t need to know them to appreciate Ellie and Brett’s story, but some people (me) like to start at the beginning, so […]
