So, there’s going to be three parts to this one – Picture books, early readers/middle grade books, and grown-ups. Because books are perfect books forever, for everyone the end. Up first, picture books. Little Blue Truck, Little Blue Truck’s Beep Along Book, Little Blue Truck Leads The Way & Little Blue Truck’s Christmas by Alice Schertle, Illustrated by Jill McElmurry – Do you have a three-year-old boy in your life? If so, chances are that he is obsessed with cars. And trucks. And construction […]
No thank you: I’m busy that (eternity)
Complete with pie charts, drawings and doodles, the author/main character of We Should Hang Out Sometime conducts a thorough review of his past relationships to figure out why he’s never had a ‘real girlfriend’. He chronicles his escapades in homeschooling, youth group, golfing disasters, childhood cancer and the rules of having an amputated leg. (You know I’m particularly interested in books with main characters with disabilities, so I really wanted to love this book, but … alas.) From his first, less than 24-hours-long girlfriend in middle […]
The book I took the most notes on this year: More listening, less lesson-ing.
I know I’ve mentioned my … unique… family situation here before, but just in case: I live with my brother and his two children, since the passing of his wife a few years ago. I’m a main decision maker (read co-parent) for two young, alive persons, which was unexpected and has been…challenging. So, when NetGalley offered me this book, I grabbed it eagerly. Then I read the intro and thought “God I hope so” to all of the author’s claims of helping to create partnerships […]
More murdering for the holidays
(Most of)* My biggest complaints about the recent Captain America: Civil War movie were that it was unnecessary. Unnecessary in the “why are you fighting right now” way, not in the “why is there another Captain America movie way”, which is never going to come out of my mouth. The largest contributing factor to why I feel it was unnecessary fighting is probably my addiction to MCU fanfiction. Because in fanfiction, everybody can live in Tony’s stupid tower and have movie nights on Thursday (Thor’s […]
“I’m not that girl. I’m not. I’m someone else forged in a mirrored room, like steel melted down and made stronger.”
As the first book, The Falconer, opens, we find a young lady – our heroine, as it happens – at the refreshment table, listening as other young ladies gossip about the possibility of her murdering her mother and/or being insane. So, an auspicious beginning to an entirely epic tale. A tale which includes legends & fairies and fae – although, really, some of these fairies resemble nothing so much as demons and hell hounds, dragons and vampires, if you’re asking me – and those that fight […]
Picture books for little pals
Are You Sleeping Little One by Hans-Christian Schmidt & Cynthia Vance – An adorable bedtime board book to add to your toddler’s collection: The illustrations are cheerful, sweet & simple – even the snake is cute! The baby animals are all given appropriate names (joey, owlet), so there’s some sneaky learning involved, and (because I am the literal worst when it comes to rhyme schemes and needing the meter to be ab.so.lute.ly perfect, and “flamingo” is pushing it a bit too far syllable-wise,) 9/10 points […]
