Dealing with a Desperate Demon by Charlotte Stein

May 5, 2025 by NatalieH 3 Comments

I read Charlotte Stein’s How to Help a Hungry Werewolf earlier this year and was very surprised by how much I liked it. The basic description isn’t something I’d normally vibe with (women falling for men that bullied them due to werewolf mating shenanigans is kind of an ick), but it was actually Emmalita’s review that piqued my interest in reading it. I’m glad I did, because it wasn’t at all what I expected and something about Stein’s writing (it’s very dialogue heavy) really worked […]

I want to be where the people aren’t

Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez

May 2, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

I’ve been on a bit of a contemporary romance kick recently, and, after reading most of Ali Hazelwood and Emily Henry’s books and enjoying them to varying degrees, have been searching for books with a similar sort of vibe (i.e., fun, easy to read, with a sprinkling of spiciness). I recently picked up Abby Jimenez’s Part of Your World, mostly just because I know she’s a popular author and wanted to give her books a try. As to why this one specifically, The Little Mermaid […]

Live and let die

The Undercutting of Rosie and Adam by Megan Bannen

April 30, 2025 by NatalieH 1 Comment

I read and loved Megan Bannen’s The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy and its follow-up, The Undermining of Twyla and Frank last year, so I was happy to receive ARC (though this hasn’t influenced my review of this book!) for the third (and seemingly final) book in the series, The Undercutting of Rosie and Adam (which is releasing in July). Rosie Fox is an immortal demigod, around the age of 150, and works as a “Marshall” (sort of a combination between a park ranger and […]

Succession, but make it magic

Gifted & Talented by Olivie Blake

April 25, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

Olivie Blake is one of those authors that I like, but recognize the flaws in her writing enough that I rarely recommend her work (so, only if I know more about the personality and preferences of the person I would be recommending it to). She tends to write books where the plot goes completely off the rails, but something about her writing style really vibes with me. Her characters are frequently unlikeable but have realistic flaws (somewhat uncomfortably, ones that are relatable enough to me) […]

Quoth the Raven ‘WE ARE MAGNIFICENT’

The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson

April 24, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

I have a bit of a fascination with ravens, so when I saw Antonia Hodgson’s new release The Raven Scholar at the bookstore, it immediately caught my eye (it’s also purple and shiny, two other things that please me for no logical reason). I didn’t know much about the author or the plot, so I went into this one fairly blind. Set in a world where people can join organizations (somewhat of a mix between religious and vocational) dedicated to the sort-of God-spirits of various […]

Into the Spindleverse

Fractured Fables by Alix E. Harrow

April 15, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

I’ve enjoyed the previous novels I’ve read by Alix E. Harrow (particularly The Ten Thousand Doors of January and Starling House), so when I came across Fractured Fables on a recent trip to the bookstore, I was excited to find something by her that I had not yet read. This is actually a collection of two stories (I never know what the difference is between a “short story” and a “novella”, but they’re both 100-ish pages long, including some cool illustrations), A Spindle Splintered and […]
