Magic school from a fresh perspective

The Incandescent by Emily Tesh

May 31, 2025 by NatalieH 8 Comments

Emily Tesh is one of those authors that I’ve been meaning to try for quite some time and just have somehow never gotten around to. I recently got approved for an ARC (obligatory this hasn’t impacted the contents of this review, etc.) for her recently released novel, The Incandescent, so I figured this was a good place to start with her work. Set at a boarding school that teaches magic (not a magic boarding school, it’s just one more subject for students, along with more […]

Problematic for sure

Problematic Summer Romance by Ali Hazelwood

May 30, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

Not in Love is probably my favourite of Ali Hazelwood’s so far, so I wanted to read the follow-up with some of the same characters, Problematic Summer Romance. Set during Eli and Rue’s (from Not in Love) wedding in Italy, Eli’s little sister and his best friend deal with their feelings for each other, despite the wide difference in their age. Like all of Hazelwood’s books that I’ve read so far, it’s well-written, there’s some moments that are genuinely funny, and I liked the side […]

Right book at the right time

The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst

May 29, 2025 by NatalieH 1 Comment

I recently finished the last book in Robin Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings series, and it pretty much made me into an emotional wreck for at least a few days. I needed a bit of a palette cleanser book, so I picked up The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst, mostly because out of all the books on my TBR, it looked like one of the least likely to make me want to ugly cry. Kiela is a librarian, taking care of the spellbooks at the […]

Liked the vibes, lacking in execution

The Spare Man by Mary Robinette Kowal

May 26, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

I picked up Mary Robinette Kowal’s The Spare Man up for no other reason than it was on sale and I liked the cover. It’s got this sort of retro-futuristic vibe that spoke to me (and essentially said “read me”). Tesla Crane is a famous heiress, inventor, and survivor of a corporate science disaster. She and her new spouse, Shal—a retired detective, are honeymooning on an interplanetary cruise liner from the Moon to Mars, when they chance upon a murder-in-progress. Shal becomes the prime suspect […]

Everybody Wants to Rule the World Except Me by Django Wexler

May 21, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

I read the first book, How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying, in Django Wexler’s Dark Lord Davi duology last year, and while I didn’t love it, I enjoyed it enough to want to read the sequel, Everybody Wants to Rule the World Except Me. The book continues the story of Davi, a young woman from our world who has gotten herself trapped in a time loop in a fairly standard medieval fantasy world. Every time the loop resets, she wakes up in […]

Better the devils you know

The Devils by Joe Abercrombie

May 12, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

Joe Abercrombie recently became one of my favourite authors (just after I finished his First Law series last year), so his most recent book, The Devils (the start of a brand-new series), has been at the top of my list for my most anticipated releases this year (also I got an ARC so I got to start reading it a couple of weeks before it’s officially released, yay! (but obligatory this didn’t affect the contents of this review, etc.)). The book is set in a […]
