I'm Natalie and 2025 is my second year participating in cannonball read. I love reading, especially fantasy and science fiction books. I live on Vancouver Island, in Canada.

The Dead Cat Tail Assassins by P. Djèlí Clark

January 3, 2025 by NatalieH 3 Comments

I’m continuing with my current M.O. of choosing the shortest unread books in my possession to read first. Clocking in at just over 200 pages, The Dead Cat Tail Assassins by P. Djèlí Clark was a fun, breezy read. The story takes place over one night in the city of Tal Ibisi. It follows Eveen, an undead assassin who works for the titular Dead Cat Tail Assassins organization of hired killers. She accepts a contract where she is only given an address, but when she […]

Pleasant but forgettable

Binti by Nnedi Okorafor

January 3, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

So, I own far too many books that I haven’t yet read. One of my goals this year is to greatly reduce that number, and I’ve somehow convinced myself that the best way to do so is to start with the shortest books first (there’s probably a flaw in my logic somewhere, but I’m going to ignore it for the time being). Coming in at 90 pages, the shortest unread book that I currently own is Binti, by Nnedi Okorafor. It won the Hugo and […]

Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman

Carl's Doomsday Scenario by Matt Dinniman

The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook by Matt Dinniman

January 3, 2025 by NatalieH 4 Comments

I was travelling visiting family over the holidays and found that I didn’t bring enough physical books to occupy myself with while away from home. I ended up searching through my Kindle for something new to read, and quickly devoured the first three books in Matt Dinniman’s Dungeon Crawler Carl series, consisting of Dungeon Crawler Carl, Carl’s Doomsday Scenario, and The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook. The plot is sort of a mix of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and The Hunger Games. One evening in […]

Thank you to my mystery gifter for this book and (super cute!) bookmark. There wasn’t a name on it, so if it was you, please let me know so I can thank you properly!

One need not be a chamber to be haunted

A House With Good Bones by T. Kingfisher

August 12, 2024 by NatalieH 1 Comment

CBR Bingo: Dun Dun – This is a creepy book with a growing sense of dread. I’ve read a *lot* of T. Kingfisher’s work this year and loved pretty much all of them. Despite this, I’ve been a little hesitant to start with her more horror-focused novels, as it’s not a genre I generally read a lot of, or enjoy all that much. I think I’ve now ran out of her non-horror novels to read (at least until my copy of A Sorceress Comes to […]

Meh

Evocation by S. T. Gibson

June 17, 2024 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

I read S. T. Gibson’s A Dowry of Blood — a retelling of Dracula from the point of view of one of his brides — earlier this year and absolutely adored it. The writing was beautiful, the characters were interesting, and I loved the general vibe (it was giving the vampire flashback scenes from Buffy and Angel, without the terrible accents). Her latest novel, Evocation, the first in a planned series (The Summoner’s Circle), was recently released, so I picked it up. Evocation follows David […]
