Which witch is which?

The Orphan Witch by Paige Crutcher

January 11, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

The Orphan Witch by Paige Crutcher is another book that I’ve owned for quite some time and don’t initially remember why I picked it up. It does have a very pretty cover, so I recently decided to read it. The book tells the story of Persephone May, a woman who, when she looks anyone in the eye, causes strange things to happen. After the latest incident, where she caused a man that she’d been flirting with to walk directly into traffic, caused a public scene, […]

What’s the opposite of warp speed?

Warp by Lev Grossman

January 8, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

Lev Grossman’s The Magicians Trilogy is one of my favourite book series of all time (I also understand why it might not be everyone’s cup of tea). I also loved his take on the King Arthur mythos, The Bright Sword, which came out last year. I’ve had one of his earlier novels, Warp, sitting on my shelf for a while now, and it fits my current method of choosing books to quickly reduce my physical TBR pile (i.e., read the shortest ones first), so I […]

The Ghost in the Machine

Rubicon by J. S. Dewes

January 7, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

One of my favourite reads last year was J. S. Dewes The Divide trilogy. When I learned that she’d also written a standalone novel, Rubicon, I had to pick it up. It is set in a world where humanity lives on two planets orbiting a dying sun (just how imminent the death approaches is a topic somewhat up for debate) and is at war with a race of sentient robots, known as Mechs. Adriene Valero is a “pathfinder” in a military unit (sort of a […]

A middling middle book

Sunbringer by Hannah Kaner

January 6, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

I read Hannah Kaner’s novel, Godkiller, about a month ago, and liked it enough to pick up second book in the Fallen Gods trilogy, Sunbringer. Godkiller told the story of Kissen, a “godkiller” in the kingdom of Middren. A few years after a war involving the gods, worship is outlawed in the kingdom. Kissen is sort of a bounty hunter, tracking down and removing problematic gods from villages. When she meets a young girl, Inara, who is inextricably linked to a small god of white […]

Anyway, here’s Wonderwall

The Gate of the Feral Gods by Matt Dinniman

The Butcher's Masquerade by Matt Dinniman

The Eye of the Bedlam Bride by Matt Dinniman

January 5, 2025 by NatalieH 5 Comments

After reading the first three books in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series by Matt Dinniman while traveling between Christmas and New Years, I was excited to continue with the series. In the short time since, I’ve flown through the next three books: The Gate of the Feral Gods, The Butcher’s Masquerade, and The Eye of the Bedlam Bride. These books continue the story of Carl and Princess Donut, his ex-girlfriend’s cat, as they compete in the galactic gameshow, Dungeon Crawler World after the collapse of […]

Yawn

The High Mountain Court by A. K. Mulford

January 4, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

I’m not entirely sure how I ended up with a copy of The High Mountain Court, by A. K. Mulford. I don’t remember buying it or being gifted it, but it’s probably been sitting on my shelf for at least the past few years. I didn’t know much about this book before starting to read it. It tells the story of nineteen-year-old Remy, who believes herself to be the last red witch alive after the King of the Northern Court invaded the High Mountain Court […]
