Nart is an avid romance reader who dabbles in other stuff when she has the spoons. When she’s not reading she’s a bureaucrat both professionally and as an activist because she’s a masochist. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Nart's Quick Questions interview.)

A book that manages to juggle serious storytelling with slapstick humour

A Wicked Kind of Husband by Mia Vincy

May 5, 2020 by Nart 1 Comment

This book was recently reviewed by Malin and was sufficient to induce me to get it. Content warnings: deaths of spouses, children, parents. Suicide. Miscarriages. One instance of really really on the line consent stuff. Plot: Cassandra is jilted by fiance. Her father arranges for Joshua, a friend and business magnate to marry her instead, because only married women can inherit property (through their husbands, since they didn’t legally exist as distinct from their husbands) to make sure she can keep the property in the family […]

A necessary book for white progressives interested in getting a primer on race

White fragility by Robin Diangelo

May 5, 2020 by Nart Leave a Comment

There have been a lot of comments about this book on this site and references to it in reviewing other books, but surprisingly no actual review! So here we go. I was originally attracted to this book as a way of understanding white people. To be clear, I am white. But as a Jew, an immigrant, and a person raised in relative poverty, I’ve never felt the sense of implicit belonging Diangelo speaks about. I spend a lot of time thinking about race and racism […]

Last book of the best dang series I’ve read this year

Warrior of the World by Jeffe Kennedy

April 19, 2020 by Nart Leave a Comment

I love this series. I *love* this series. When I sat down to write this review, I thought I have probably run out of things to say about this series. I reviewed book one and book two with an almost embarrassing amount of gush about the pacing of the story and character development. This is the final book in this series, though the whole story is set before the stories in the Twelve Kingdoms which I will be picking up after (and have vague recollections of?). All […]

A good read, but only if you can turn your brain all the way off

Beautiful by Christina Lauren

April 14, 2020 by Nart Leave a Comment

This book is the last in the Beautiful series. I actually tried to get into it a long while ago and DNFd the first book for reasons I no longer remember. I’ve since read two Lauren books I’ve enjoyed (Unhoneymooners and Dating You Hating You) and another I DNFd (Roomies). So suffice to say Lauren is very hit and miss for me. This one is one of her highest rated books, so I deviated from my hard rule on chronology to see if I could […]

A sweet, witty, well researched historical novel, but with ghosts!

The Widow of Rose House by Diana Biller

April 9, 2020 by Nart 2 Comments

This is Biller’s debut novel and I assure you, when the inevitable sequels come out focusing on other members of Moore household, I will be injecting it straight into my veins. The Plot: A rich widow of an abusive POS in late 19th century New York tries to reinvent herself by buying a creepy old house, renovating it, and writing a book about it. Only the team she’s hired has absconded, because ghosts. The only thing to do is to work with a handsome, famous […]

A deliciously sweet marshmallow of a book with an unnecessary ending

Teach Me by Olivia Dade

April 5, 2020 by Nart 5 Comments

This book is well loved by Cannonballers. Faintingviolet talked about the kindness with which the characters treat one another. Emmalita pointed out that this was a “robust kindness with boundaries.” And they’re completely right. This book absolutely bursts with the kind of kindness that isn’t rooted in “being nice” but rather in respect. And before I get into this, I just want to say that I really really enjoyed this book and you should read their reviews for how sweet it is. But rather than […]
