Nart is an avid romance reader who dabbles in other stuff when she has the spoons. When she’s not reading she’s a bureaucrat both professionally and as an activist because she’s a masochist. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Nart's Quick Questions interview.)

Like a Hallmark rom com, only good

In A Holidaze by Christina Lauren

December 17, 2020 by Nart 3 Comments

If you love wholesome, funny holiday love stories, you will love this book. Plot: Young woman (I’m old, 26 feels young to me now) who has kind of moved through life passively, has the worst Christmas ever at a cabin her family and extended chosen family spend every Christmas together. On their drive back to the airport, she makes a wish for the universe to show her what would make her happy, and they promptly get into a car accident. She wakes up on the […]

A visually beautiful book to test your imagination

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

December 17, 2020 by Nart 2 Comments

This book is absolutely gorgeous and inventive. If you like like lush prose and vivid worlds, you will love this book. Plot: two magicians have an ongoing proxy war between one another to see who can choose and train up a better magician. This book follows a battle that eventually creates the night circus, a magical place where the two combatants fight to show who is a better magician by creating acts and displays that normal people won’t realize is real magic. This is a […]

Proper fantasy world building, what a concept!

A Heart of Blood and Ashes by Milla Vane

December 9, 2020 by Nart 2 Comments

I should start this review by saying I might change it based on how reading the second book goes, and that Vane created  a really interesting and cool world to play in, but in my opinion, the romance, which is prominently featured in the story, is a dumpster fire. Plot: The leader of a small nation of warriors that live in the wilderness, resentful of their more “cultured” allies to the south and are totally not Scots, learns of the murder of his parents. Being […]

A soothing, if a bit dark, seaside romance

The Proposal by Mary Balogh

December 9, 2020 by Nart Leave a Comment

I liked this one! Hallelujah! Balogh is a safe choice for me, because I know she doesn’t do problematic heroes and her heroines tend to have actual personalities and usually explore trauma in a pretty interesting way. This book is no different. Plot: widow falls on the beach, badly spraining her ankle. Fortunately, a military hero is nearby to meet up with what we can probably call a PTSD support group for people who didn’t know what PTSD was yet. Realizing no one else is […]

Outlander, but with less going on

Beautiful Wreck by Larissa Brown

December 9, 2020 by Nart Leave a Comment

This book is follows a pretty well trod premise at this point, though it does it well. Plot: Dissatisfied Future Woman craves intimacy. Accidentally falls back in time to the Viking Age because of some weird quirk of 22nd century VR tech. Falls in love with a chieftain who has sworn to never touch anyone because of the curse he was born with (a big birthmark that is deemed a foul omen). They lust after each other for a few hundred pages between Dissatisfied Future […]

Secret Identity Inception set in Camelot

The Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White

December 9, 2020 by Nart Leave a Comment

This book is an excellent example of quality YA titles. If you like Young Adult novels and have any fond memories at all of reading about King Arthur, this is going to be right up your alley. Plot: Guinevere is on her way to marry King Arthur. Only it’s not Guinevere! It’s a sorceress who has been trained by Merlin to protect Arthur in secret because they’ve had to ban magic use within Camelot. Only maybe that’s not the whole story? This book does an […]
