Nart is an avid romance reader who dabbles in other stuff when she has the spoons. When she’s not reading she’s a bureaucrat both professionally and as an activist because she’s a masochist. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Nart's Quick Questions interview.)

Queen Move by Kennedy Ryan

May 17, 2021 by Nart Leave a Comment

Kennedy Ryan writes books about unstoppable, spectacular women and the men who love them. This book is no different. Plot: Kimba and Ezra were born on the same day and were inseparable through their childhood. Then the friendship between their parents splintered, and they didn’t see each other for 24 years. Kimba spent that time dealing with the pressure of having an equal parts impressive and oppressive family legacy of community leaders that includes freedom riders and big political players. Ezra spent that time struggling […]

The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon

May 14, 2021 by Nart 3 Comments

Enemies to lovers done competently! Hurrah! Plot: Shay Goldstein is a public radio producer, but her real dream is hosting on the radio, even if her voice isn’t exactly standard for on-air personalities. Even though she’s been there for a decade, Dominic Yun, who literally just graduated (but with a masters) is already getting treated better than she is. He’s a patronizing dick and she’s a bitter bitch. But their bickering is so fun to listen to, they end getting maneuvered into hosting their own show […]

Get your socialist, anti-racist dukes here!

Catch a Falling Duke by Eve Pendle

May 11, 2021 by Nart 3 Comments

This is the conclusion of Pendle’s Fallen trilogy and a sort of farewell to historical fiction. It is by far the strongest of the 3 books but can be read as a standalone. Plot: Hugo just inherited a Dukedom. Turns out that much of the wealth of that dukedom was built on the backs of slaves. Slavery had ended 50 years prior, but it still feels wrong to continue to benefit from such a vile thing, especially while the people who were victimized by it got […]

Fallen women and the happy endings they deserve

Once a Fallen Lady by Eve Pendle

May 11, 2021 by Nart 1 Comment

There are simply not enough novels about women that have been thrown away by society getting their happy ending while also making the world a better place. Plot: Happening concurrently with the events of Falling for a Rake, this book follows Lydia, the young woman who our hero Lord Markshall had impregnated and then promptly abandoned. She has since bought herself a new life as a respectable widow in a tiny town. She’s been doing the best she can, but she’s had to rely on […]

“We must stop confusing bullies with leaders.”

Mediocre by Ijeoma Oluo

May 6, 2021 by Nart Leave a Comment

Reading this book puts me in the mind of what I’ve seen on TV of going to one of those televised evangelical church sessions where you pay someone to slap you in the face to cure you of cancer, only instead of a conman trying to steal people’s money, it’s an intelligent woman giving me the words to express frustrations I’ve never been able to properly explain and it is so cathartic it almost  feels like an out of body experience. Plot (yes, I’m calling […]

Bridgerton with Politics, Fake Rakes, and Fern Hunts?

Falling for a Rake by Eve Pendle

May 6, 2021 by Nart Leave a Comment

If you’re looking for a Julia Quinn-esque story that is more interested in the politics of the day, this is the book for you. Pendle is not one for ballroom scenes when she can take you to a workhouse or an impoverished farm. Plot: After losing a fiance to a tragic hunting accident she was involved in, Emily becomes obsessed with perfection to protect her family from even the possibility of a stain on her, and therefore their, reputation. After wronging a woman in a […]
