Nart is an avid romance reader who dabbles in other stuff when she has the spoons. When she’s not reading she’s a bureaucrat both professionally and as an activist because she’s a masochist. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Nart's Quick Questions interview.)

A Duke in Disguise by Cat Sebastian

August 15, 2021 by Nart 3 Comments

Cat Sebastian is a pillar in historical romance and for good reason. Sebastian writes deeply sympathetic characters and makes even fantastical plot points feel grounded and real. Plot: Ash was an orphan sold to an engraver as an apprentice as a young teen and Verity’s father ran a newspaper. Upon meeting, they (and Verity’s brother Nate) became close as siblings and have lived in each other’s pockets for the better part of a decade. This is complicated by the fact that Ash has been in […]

What do you call a guilty pleasure you don’t enjoy?

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire by Jennifer Armentrout

August 4, 2021 by Nart 6 Comments

This series has some weird hold on me. I don’t believe in finishing things I don’t enjoy. I am proud of my DNFs. I do not believe that guilty pleasures are a thing – either enjoy a thing or don’t. This is not a completionist herculean task and I am not ashamed of reading them. I just don’t understand it. I do not like these books. I find the plot painfully predictable, the characters unbelievably stupid, dramatic when it makes no sense and totally chill […]

“We’re of one mind, Grenville and I, and the mind is hers, on account of my being a man and not having one.”

The Last Hellion by Loretta Chase

August 1, 2021 by Nart 1 Comment

The only thing that tones down an alphahole hero is an alphahole heroine, and this fine fine line is Chase’s sweet spot. The Last Hellion is no different. Plot: Enormous-asshole-with-a-sob-story Vere Mallory has been drinking and whoring and gambling his way through life because the people he loves keep dying so he’s decided to stop loving people. Then he meets Lydia Grenville whose life has been 10 times harder, who is just as stubborn, angry at everything, and prone to get herself into all sorts […]

“You durned whippersnapper, ain’t you kids ever heard of casual sex?”

Laws of Attraction by Sarah Title

July 25, 2021 by Nart Leave a Comment

Are you looking for a sweet, light summer read that includes a kissing booth staffed by a dog? Title’s got you covered. Plot: Becky was recently dumped, so she’s drinking away her woes in a bar while her best friend encourages her to get over him by getting under someone else. She meets Deke, an attractive guy with a decent sense of humour and it’s on for the night. Becky is a law librarian at a large corporate firm. Deke turns out to be the […]

A love letter to learning

Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer

July 25, 2021 by Nart 1 Comment

I am on a journey to rediscover science. It’s one of those things that I found fascinating as a kid and deathly boring as a subject in school. A few months ago I picked up The Great Unknown by Marcus du Sautoy, a scientist whose job is to make scientific thought accessible to the public, and found the boredom, combined with the frustration at who du Sautoy featured prominently and who he didn’t (spoiler alert: it’s women and people of colour, they haven’t done a […]

“Sometimes, being convenient instead of real was exhausting. So maybe from now on, she’d stop.”

Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert

July 25, 2021 by Nart Leave a Comment

Talia Hibbert is a damn treasure. Plot: Eve Brown is a bit of a scatterbrain and has a pathological fear of failure. Only one solution – never try, never fail! Only her parents have had it up to their necks with their adult daughter’s failure to launch, so they hit her with a challenge. Find a job. keep it for a whole year. Then she can have access to her trust fund again. Being on the dramatic side, Eve launches herself out of the house […]
